Founded in 1962 by Eleanor Lambert, the CFDA has a long history of supporting young talented American designers. Each year, with the contribution of Vogue Magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America hosts a Fashion Fund Show, the purpose of which is to generate a sufficient income to fund and mentor the finalists.
As predictable as it sounds, this fashion event is anything but ordinary. It always features the most prominent (future) figures of the fashion industry, as well as the most extravagant and creative celebrities, whose fashion choices often become a point of discussion the following days. Both the designers and the guests look forward to this event, as it has so far acted as a springboard for designers such as Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra and Paul Andrew.
The 2015 CDFA/ Vogue Fashion Fund Show, hosted by one of America’s golden couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, along with Amazon Fashion’s Cathy Beaudoin and Vogue’s Lisa Love and Mark Holgate, cheerfully reflected its finalists’ eclecticism, whose talent will be eventually awarded after being judged by Jenna Lyons, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour and Andrew Rosen in New York, on November 2. This annual Fashion Fund Show, held at the legendary Los Angeles’ Chateau Marmont, also represents the last opportunity for the designers to show off their pieces, before officially knowing what their future holds. This time around, some of these pieces have already been worn by one of the newest It-Girl in town: “Kendall Jenner tried on the wares of all 10 finalists in our November issue. I was literally looking at it on the car ride over here, so it was really cool to see the designs that Kendall wore, in real life,” said Kendall’s elder sister Kim Kardashian.
The 10 finalists of the 2015 CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund show, however, not only had to literally dress to impress their judges, but also had a great opportunity to further show what they are capable of, wherever it will lead them to win the prestigious CFDA awards or not. The guests of the show included celebrity guests, such as Reese Witherspoon, Solange Knowles, Chrissy Teigen and James Corden, Alicia Vikander and John Legend, who later made their own sort of fashion show.
Besides the golden couple, who shared a total black combination, the celebrities’ fashion choices ranged from Reese Witherspoon’s white boho-chic dress designed by Draper James, to Kirsten Dunst’s micro-mosaic sparkling Rodarte mid-calf dress; from Solange Knowles’ and Florence Welch’s Seventies fever, respectively designed by Ryan Roche and Gucci, to Kiernan Shipka’s floral-print dress by Giamba.
The event even featured a mini fashion show, hosted by the audience’s toddlers and by some extremely fashionable dogs, which definitely helped make the show look more welcoming and interesting. From Baldwin’s grungy skaters, which gave the show some strong ‘90s reminiscences, to Gelina’s reinterpretation of the schoolgirl trend, the 2015 CFDA/ Vogue fashion event perfectly showed how diverse the fashion industry is, and definitely proved that creativity is not dead.
Following one of the latest trends, this year’s CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund show welcomed some dancers and performers on stage, confirming once again that the fashion industry’s future is all about entertainment rather than mere aseptic shows. Of course, each CFDA/ Vogue Fashion show is traditionally followed by an iconic and tres chic tea party, where both the designers and the guests can raise their cup of Earl Grey to fashion and creativity. Now we just have to wait and see who will hold the CFDA’s crown!
