1st of May, the night of the most glamorous blockbuster fashion spectacle of the year, never fails to delight us with an array of spontaneous and insanely creative avant-garde style moments. This year’s MET Gala was certainly no different, in fact, celebrities and pop stars really raised the bar and the word glamour was given a greater, much grander dimension.
The theme for this year’s MET Gala was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons. Rei Kawakubo is one of the most inspiring and prolific fashion designers in the world, whose work has given us the opportunity to value hybridity and recreation, and forced us to rethink our fashion aesthetics with her strikingly unconventional collections.
She is the first living fashion designer, after Yves Saint Laurent in 1983, to become the sole theme of the MET Gala’s glamorous event and the exhibition itself.
Anna Wintour, the official host and chair of the MET Gala since 1995, was joined by several other co-chairs, such as Katy Perry, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen, Pharell Williams, and Kawakubo, who is serving as an honorary chair this year.
The red carpet literally made us swoon with delight at the adventurously creative attires flaunted by celebrities to honor the work of avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo. Some of the dresses were a lot like finely sculptured works of art, while some sheer and barely-there dresses celebrated the gorgeously honed bodies and secured hefty attention headlines.
The glamour aggrandized and exploded inside the event, aside from the stunning statue carved out of five hundred thousand roses, Katy Perry, Migos, Pharell Williams, and John Legend entertained the guests with their stellar performances.
Katy Perry raised the temperatures with her audaciously raunchy ensemble, which she changed into for her performance. The pop queen flaunted a flesh-revealing and raunchily shiny latex leather bondage-inspired outfit by Vex Clothing that consisted of sheer leggings, high-waisted shorts and a petit bralettes, all put together with a saucy arrangement of straps.
She kicked off her performance swaying to her new song, “Chained to the Rhythm”, and then went on to perform a stellar medley of some of her most sensational hits, such as “Firework” and “Dark House”.
But temperatures really started to soar and every single celebrity got up on their feet to sway to the rhythm when she performed with Migos, presenting their amazing rendition of their latest new collaboration, “Bon Appetit”.
After Katy’s hardcore performance, John Legend got behind the piano and crooned a series of his classic romantic numbers that set the audience swooning with delight. He looked insanely handsome under the spotlights, wearing a charming white blazer, with sharp black trousers and a black bow tie.
The After-Party, or should we say after-parties?
After confidently pulling of her glamorous-yet-uncomfortable Comme des Garcons outfit all the way until dinner, Rihanna graced super-exclusive star studded after party at 1 Oak in a chic Prada pajama shirt, paired up with gorgeous sandals and Marabou feather trim.
Rihanna’s exclusice bash was a star-studded affair attended by Kerry Washington, Janelle Monáe, Hailey Baldwin, Mary J Blige, Frank Ocean, and Kendall Jenner with her could-be boyfriend, A$AP Rocky.
Kendall ditched her saucy sheer body-suit for a patent leather Danielle Guizio skirt that had an audaciously bold slit, paired with an energetically bright yellow sheer anorak that gave us a striking view of her matching yellow bra.
Come to think of it, it appears as if she went to great lengths to color-coordinate her outfit with rumored beau A$AP Rocky’s Gucci pants and Carhartt vest.
On the other side of town, Katy Perry, the star performer of the night, hosted her own wild after-party at the Boom Boom. The goddess flaunted a glittery thigh-high garter belt, paired with a sequined robe coat from Ulyana Sergeenko.
Katy Perry teamed up with DJ Mia Moretti to provide the party with killer music, including performances by DJ Equal, Moretti and Margot of The Dolls, Jesse Marco, and a sensational performance by a powerful all-women brass band, The Original Pinettes.
Her party was graced by the gorgeous faces of Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, Karlie Kloss, Pharrell Williams, Madonna, Olsen sisters, Emily Ratajkowski, Rita Ora, Bella Hadid, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, and Ruby Rose.
J.Rod looked cuddly and cozy as the made their way to the after-party. J. Lo ditched her Valentino gown for a chic mini dress.
Chrissy Teigen also slipped into a mini-dress, and she appeared to be giggling at something John Legend was crooning into her ears, probably jokes about getting a night off from their little princess, Luna.
Bella Hadid stayed true to her audaciously raunchy signature glam by ditching her racy Alexander Wang catsuit for a chain-meal tank dress with delicate beads. She paired up her look with a sultry thong, and strategically well-placed nipple tapes that literally made us thank the Lord! Bella just served us sexy with a capital S.
Priyanka Chopra clearly steals the crown for the easiest and most functional after-party transformation since her Ralph Lauren trench coat gown had a detachable train that allowed her to ditch those 200 yards of fabric for a minidress in a matter of seconds. Now that’s what you call smart!
