James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segments as part of his “Late Late Show” bring out the absolute best in celebrities. When Jennifer Lopez hopped in the passenger seat on Tuesday, we knew we would be in for a great show. This is the same seat, which has housed such a wide variety of today’s top singers, like Adele, One Direction, Justin Bieber, Sia, and Carrie Underwood, and even iconic stars like Elton John and Stevie Wonder. With each celebrity’s time in the carpool lane, there is something special involved; for instance, when Stevie Wonder made his appearance, he called Corden’s wife Julia for a surprise serenade.
Well, this time around, Corden decided to begin by taking a look in J. Lo’s contact list on her cell phone. With names like Bradley Cooper, Chris Brown, Cristiano Ronaldo, Demi Lovato, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Fergie, and “Iggy” – Iggy Azalea’s shortened title in her contacts – it was difficult for the host to choose just one celebrity to send a text to. Naturally, however, when he came to now-Oscar holder Leonardo DiCaprio he didn’t need to look any further. And so began what has become an overnight sensation; all within two text messages!
After first beginning with “Hey Leo,” Lopez instantly cut him off, telling him to add something more natural to her. The resulting message was then as follows: “Hey baby, I’m feeling like I need to cut loose. Any suggestions? Let me know.” To top everything off, he signed the message: “J. Lo, you know, from the block.”
This last addition would have potentially been overkill, making it clear that the message wasn’t really from the singer. But, once the message was sent, all went back to as it had been, with J. Lo and Corden jamming out to some great songs from J. Lo’s singing career (Jenny from the Block was naturally included into the list) and even throwing in a Bruno Mars number. They also pulled over for a break, where Corden mirrored Lopez’ movements and instructions on how to film a music video – the result was hilarious and fun to watch! But then, everything got back down to business, when J. Lo’s phone started to buzz.
DiCaprio not only responded, but didn’t seem to be phased by the offbeat signature at the end: “You mean tonight, Boo Boo? Club-wise?” This sparked a great deal of laughter, and continued embarrassment from J. Lo that the initial message was sent in the first place. She took the incident all in good fun, however, laughing at the fact that he thought she was serious. She did make sure to note that she wouldn’t be going out that night, but rather at home, cooking dinner with her children.
You can never know quite what to expect when a new celebrity gets into Corden’s car, but it’s safe to say that no one was quite expecting to see DiCaprio referring to Lopez as “Boo Boo”! But I’m certainly glad the exchange happened, especially seeing the good spirits with which Lopez took the joke.
