Intuition and talent: these are the words behind Adidas’ never-before-seen success, whose collaborations are always the most highly anticipated. A new partnership could soon lessen the distances between sportswear and athleisure even more, and that’s that of Alexander Wang x Adidas. As of now, what we are talking about is just rumors.
If Alexander Wang is about to partner with Adidas, that is something only time will officially tell. However, if the source that spilled the beans for WWD is right, things are about to hit it big like never before (and we already know when it comes to WWD, rumors always turn our to be true, just take the Maria Grazia Chiuri case as an example).
Fashion designer and Zoolander 2 cameo Alexander Wang, is apparently already working on a brand new Adidas collaborative line (not a collection), the results of which will be unveiled at the forthcoming New York Fashion Week in September. As far as we know, then, right after the runway show a commemorative party will celebrate both the collaboration and Alexander Wang’s spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection right after the runway show.
Wang, who is no stranger when it comes to teaming up with fashion giants, already collaborated on a capsule collection with Swedish retailer H&M back in 2014, but this brand new partnership will apparently look more like something Kanye West is currently doing with Adidas, and thus not as a mere capsule collection.
Whether what we are about to see is a more urban, haute couture-eque version of Yeezy, or an athleisure-infused capsule collection, the Alexander Wang x Adidas collaboration will surely reveal another side of one of the world’s leading sportswear brands, the sales of which are continuously increasing due to such collaborations (especially thanks to the Pharrell Williams x Adidas partnership).
Glam rock and with a signature attitude that has often been dubbed as ‘off-duty model style’, Alexander Wang’s signature style is yet to be experienced with at the Adidas studios, and the Alexander Wang x Adidas line will likely help the German sportswear retailer finally reach an even broader audience.
Wang, who stepped down from his position as Balenciaga’s creative director in 2015, is only working at his eponymous label at the moment, a choice that he may have purposely made at this point also to have more time to explore the almost endless high/low combinations the fashion industry constantly treats us to. His ‘off-duty model look’ could blossom as a matter of fact, along with Adidas.
As for Adidas, the German sportswear brand has so far successfully courted many fashion designers, among which Stella McCartney, Raf Simons and Mary Katrantzou surely stand out.
While waiting impatiently for September 10th, you can have a look at the newly released Stella McCartney x Adidas collection.
