It appears that many fashion houses are having their creative directors replaced and Versus Versace is no exception. Yesterday, Donatella Versace appointed Anthony Vaccarello as the creative director of Versus Versace, the sister line of Versace, apparently because the world just didn’t have enough sexy black dresses. Well, no one actually announced it thus, but many fashion bloggers are certainly thinking it, if not outright commenting about it. After a successful launch to the capsule Anthony Vaccarello for Versus collection last fall, the Paris-based designer with an unholy love for short skirts and sheer blouses has signed on for a more permanent position, wherein he will be replacing Christopher Kane, the 32-year-old Scottish fashion designer whose personal brand is now part of Kering, with a 51% ownership on their part.
Donatella Versace will remain at her post of artistic director, while she absolutely loves having brought in Vaccarello onto the team. In her own words, “I’ve followed Anthony’s work from his very first collection; as soon as I met him I realised immediately he was the one, he gets it, his talent screams Versus Versace. I love his fresh energy and innovation, and I love being surrounded by a talent which brings newness to Versace.” Since the new creative director has often been compared to the founder of the fashion house, Gianni Versace, it was a fitting role that was to be expected. The Versace brand has been a family business to date so it definitely is nice to see something new offered because of an outsider’s experience.
Versace has gone to major piece that’s been well-loved by the celebrities of the day, with the Black Dress of Elizabeth Hurley a great classic in 1994 – to this day it is known as “that dress” – and the Green Versace Dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000 at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards voted as the fifth most iconic dress of all time in 2008. It is a grand feat to have such pieces in its collection and the Versace name is well known around the world. Even the Versace cosmetics are great staples in one’s makeup bag these days.
At this point, Anthony Vaccarello will be responsible for the men’s wear and woman’s wear collections of Versus Versace, the first of which will be unveiled during the fall season of 2015, for that very season, with the brand unveiling the collections at the time they are available for purchase. It’s not yet confirmed if he will be at the Milan Fashion Week. His teasing words to questions about this were as such: “It will be presented when it will be ready. We haven’t defined yet how, when or where it will be shown. It’s a surprise. Versus is cool, young and easy with an edge. It’s an additional opportunity to express another side of my vision. And it’s fun to work with Donatella.” We can certainly imagine how fun it would be and cannot wait to be thrilled by all that he will turn the Versace fashions into.
