Carolina Herrera has long been one of our favourites when it comes to the Fashion Week runway shows that take over our lives for just about a month twice a year. She’s one of those designers that cater to the young at heart but mature personalities, with a resolutely modern minded appeal to her inspirations and final products. Her creations for the Carolina Herrera spring/summer 2016 collection that was presented yesterday midway through morning certainly fit in with our ideals for her, only serving to solidify our love for everything Carolina Herrera.
She’s all uptown girl really, with a slight downtown aspect to her creations. She knows how to capture the more delicate nature of a woman without oversimplifying her appeal or sexing her up too much. On the contrary, she brings out the genteel, the beauty and the sophistication of a lady, who understands her femininity without giving up her power, hiding it in those modern pleats of her dress made up of narrow strips of tech fabrics stitched onto transparent mesh. It is decorous but discreet, gorgeous without overdoing it. It is modern and futuristic even while still bringing in the appeal that was found in the old-fashioned designs in this stylization.
Herrera has also got the real pleats appearing on the day dresses though and her fascination with a dusky pink is clear, like the summer blush of a lady pure of the world’s troubles. She is a confident woman, but one given to tea dates and strolls about town with the girls, one, who expects a courtship and values herself rather highly. She is a lady through and through and that is the image Carolina Herrera has created time and again.
In Herrera’s own words, fashion should be optimistic and since this appears to be her rose period, it is only fitting to have shades of pink appear on the runway, albeit with a dash of black and blue and white throughout. Transparency is a big theme here, while presented in a modest manner. The designer knows that it only gets boring if you reveal everything, which essentially has led to her understanding that if she wants to captivate, a more modest approach is the best avenue to take. Peekaboo l’oeil pleats were only one of her secrets to achieving this, while techno mesh and neoprene came into focus as well.
While modesty was key, it was not cloy sweetness we were faced with but optimistic chis that centered on sophistication and gentility. She had the dresses for the evening as well as the day, while her synthetic materials appeared all the more intriguing than real silks and cottons could ever be. Off the shoulder, mid-thigh hems, high necks and calf-length skirts, the colors swirled about and there was everything to love about this particular collection that could all but literally take our breaths away. Those modern pleats really did it for us, pushing the Carolina Herrera spring 2016 collection to the top of our “to buy” lists for the upcoming seasons of beauty and warmth.
