Chalayan’s resort 2016 collection is clearly targeting people, who prefer to wear luxury clothing on a daily basis. The designer created a sophisitcated, yet casual interpratation of Cuba. Lately, Hussein Chalayan visited Cuba and, being inspired by the amazingly mixed history and culture of the country, he created another dazzling collection based on his beloved hybrids. As he himslef puts it, the maestro always tries to create combinations and hybrids of ideas. We add, he does depict those ideas perfectly in his creations.
In his search of the ideal interpretation of the country, Chalayan created a collection full of white. The latter, being the color of pureness, must have also created a beautiful contrast between the skin color of the elegant locals and their clothing, thus making a strong impact on a designer’s vision and mind. In addition to the symbolic pureness of white, Chalayan used a lot of flowers in his white looks. Flowers, which are another depiction of femininity and pureness, make up an amazingly well-thought-out look. Yet, in the Chalayan 2016 resort collection there’s also a lot of the complete opposite of white. The color of subtle elegance – black – is a workable tool on the way of portraying the mood of not-caring fun, which, in Hussein’s words, is spread all over the country.
The combination of a yellowish-green top with a skirt of a length that says “I’m shy”, but with a texture that goes on to suggest that “I can be wild” is another thing that gives you a grasp of what a fun place Cuba is to Chalayan. The designer’s sunny interpretation of the country of change can also be seen in his orange-red look. This particular look seems to be either a link to Cuba’s socialist past or the energy and the vividness that the country gave to Hussein. And when watching the military servers, Chalayan must have pictured that khaki dress with military-style pockets on its hips, the khaki skirt with a don’t-care exposition, and the military blouse colored in khaki, which works great with the feminine and flowery skirt that it’s matched with.
Another thing that seems to take up the game in this collection is the overalls. The black silken overalls depict a character full of strength, confidence, and determination, one that is also very fond of her looks. The white overalls are kind of more reckless and free-spirited, yet still quite elegant. And the rompers, white with a greyish print of people’s figures who’re taking their time and having fun, is one more jewel of the collection. The figures of the boys and girls having fun are one more way of showing the impression of a very happy place that Cuba is.
So, Chalayan’s new collection does reach its aim – it is a truly sophisticated and elaborate line, full of delicate depiction of the country that amazed Hussein, yet it is still pretty casual and can be perfectly worn on a daily basis.
