Charlotte Olympia Threw a Brazilian Carnival To Stage Spring/Summer 2017 Show

One of the London Fashion Week’s most anticipated runway shows, the Charlotte Olympia spring/summer 2017 collection is finally here, and we can fairly state it did not dash our hopes.

A glutton for punishment when it comes to work, Charlotte Dellal has teamed up with various labels throughout the recent years, such as Barbie and MAC Cosmetics, and many (me included) were wondering whether such works would have influenced her Charlotte Olympia spring/summer 2017 runway collection or not.

Presented at Park Lane Hotel, Charlotte Dellal’s latest collection took us to both the Forties and Brazil, as she combined cheerful carnival patterns with the fanciest glamour of the Forties in an overall well-mixed dream array of proposals that denotes, once again, Dellal’s capability of playing with fashion and never being afraid to dare with it.

As soon as the show drew to a close, the runway literally went bananas, with the models sporting fruit costumes and welcoming the exotic carnival-themed show. Flirty cocktail dresses and sequined swimsuits got then framed by one of the show’s ultimate starts, Brazil’s renowned Bossa Nova musician Bebel Gilberto, whose music served as the perfect soundtrack for one of Charlotte Dellal’s most whimsical fashion performances.

As for the actual Charlotte Olympia spring/summer 2017 collection, Dellal’s garments played an appealing contrast with the collection’s final dancing show, yet without being too distant from it in terms of refinements and motifs.

For her spring 2017 line-up, Charlotte Dellal uncannily managed to keep all of her different proposals linked to a common fil rouge, which is glamour. Although being chronologically and geographically distant, both the Forties and the Brazilian Carnival denote Dellal’s strong passion for the most jocose side of fashion, namely the one that lights our light-heartedness and makes us just eager to play and have fun with it.

Not for nothing, Dellal’s Forties-inspired collection is close to the retro Hollywood glamour many still look up to when it comes to high fashion, yet this time around revisited through a more modern and even burlesque-inspired lens.

“I based it on Technicolor movies from the ’40s, like Carmen Miranda’s, which I always love,” declared Charlotte Dellal backstage, providing us with the missing link we needed to understand how she managed to connect such different patterns together.

Luso-Brazilian actress and samba dancer Carmen Miranda became famous in Hollywood in the Forties, starring in movies such as Down Argentine Way and The Gang’s All Here. Dubbed “The Brazilian Bombshell”, Miranda managed to mix the Hollywood glamorous style with the Brazilian one, quickly becoming one of the world’s leading movie starts.

The Charlotte Olympia spring 2017 collection modernized and revisited Miranda’s style, treating us to a fine array of garments that Carmen would probably wear too, were she alive.

Featuring shades of only white and gold, the collection is, in fact, all about curve-hugging figures and peplum, layered lines, with only a few plunging slits and billowy palazzo pants helping the line-up get more variegated. Mini dresses, elegant t-shirts and bodycons are, instead, at the core of this collection, with oversized jewelry pieces in charge of balancing and harmonizing the overall outcome of the outfit.

As usual, Dellal delivered an extremely refined accessory line too, with the Chica Chica Boom python and fruit adorned platforms and That Night In Rio parrot bag and Perspex heels dominating the scene and, inevitably, already being one of London Fashion Week’s ultimate must-have obsessions.
