Cushnie et Ochs Spring/Summer 2017 Collection Channels Elvira Hancock

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs presented their spring/summer 2017 collection for New York Fashion Week Friday afternoon. The designing duo always aims to deliver an upscale collection for an uptown girl, to accompany their client in every area of her life. Every time a Cushnie et Ochs collection comes out, we know to expect that fun and daring yet sophisticated style that we’ve come to know and love.

In one word, the woman being designed for is sexy. She wants to be the center of attention but have the versatility in her wardrobe to go anywhere whenever she wants. The two designers themselves would look right at home in the stylish looks that walked the catwalk, and they know it.

“We’re women designing clothes for women, and we’ve been doing it for eight years now, and it’s working,” said Ochs, in an interview with Vogue.

With the sexy, youthful looks coming from the label, we weren’t surprised to see celebrities like the younger members of the Kardashian/Jenner clan as well as the Hadids sitting in the front row. There’s no doubt Cushnie et Ochs is a huge part of the starlets’ wardrobes at the turn of each season. There is a range of formality and sense of purpose with each new piece, making it a desirable line for someone with so many different events to attend.

The colors are always a point of conversation with this label as well. As always, they are straightforward and completely timeless, which helps to make sure the garments stay sophisticated and mature, even though the cutouts and amount of skin showing in each piece could easily become immature or in poor taste if not treated properly. Thankfully, these designers know how to play that game and skirt that line.

Some garments were really close to crossing that line, though, as with a navy blue sheath dress with large cutouts at the model’s side. On any woman without such a slender physique as this model, this look wouldn’t be wearable; yet, its runway impact and the impact it will have on any woman confident enough to rock it has already made it worth the risk.

The clean lines and new aspects of sex appeal coming in with each look make the overall Cushnie et Ochs spring/summer 2017 collection especially intoxicating. According to the designers, a leading source of inspiration for the collection was Elvira Hancock, a character from Brian De Palma’s 1983 film Scarface, who was portrayed by the lovely Michelle Pfeiffer. That inspiration really does show up, though, as the whole collection has this aura of the gangster era, particularly the strong, badass persona Pfeiffer played.
