The Derek Lam spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear collection was privately shown in the upscale Greenwich Hotel penthouse, where Derek Lam chose to hold a more intimate and personal showing of his collection for about 60+ editors and retailers. The collection was simplistic, chic and clean. There were no overtly extravagant details to absorb in a high energy charged atmosphere, just a simple and beautiful collection shown in a private space.
Many designers are forgoing the traditional runway show and choosing instead to do upscale, intimate showings of their collections instead and this collection by Derek Lam is a great example of why. These types of private showings allow much more information about the collection and appreciation for the collection to be circulated between the designer and those taking a look at the collection.
During this private showing, Derek Lam was able to express that his inspiration for the spring 2017 collection was primarily Georgia O’Keeffe. He explained that her austere sense of dress and the color scheme of her home in New Mexico was essentially the base for his collection, which he then treated with a thoughtful and more modern touch.
He addressed the challenge of designing a great spring collection and how he as a designer worked around these issues. The rustic and chic private showing was excellent, providing a look into a line for a specific type of woman, who will be ecstatic with her spring 2017 options.
The wide-legged style pants made several appearances in the Derek Lam spring 2017 ready-to-wear collection. In one ensemble, the top is a zippered blue suede crop top with a buckle featured on the bottom, which juxtaposes beautifully against the wide leg white pants.
For outerwear, this outfit has a grey, tan and red jacket with wide sleeves and dark brown buttons. There is also a single shoulder, asymmetrical topped black and white floor-length gown that is an eye-catching beauty in this collection.
There are several ways to describe the Derek Lam spring 2017 lineup, and chic but comfortable, light and simplistic are the ones that immediately come to mind. None of the clothing items are tightly fitted; instead they are tailored to be complementary to the figure and elegant in style.
The collection overall has an elegant and dignified look without appearing overly prim. A stunning ensemble is an ivory two-piece pants set. The pants are wide legged and flowing, while the top features a round center embellishment and strategic cut out, open neckline and careful tailoring for a flowing and sexy look.
Overall Derek Lam’s spring/summer 2017 ready-to-wear lineup is great, a cohesive and well-designed spring collection.
