Diesel Black Gold presented their spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection with the idea of a tough-girl in mind. With their utilization leather and buckles mixed with their styling of hair and makeup, they were able to complete the image. Through this image, however, the designers were able to maintain Diesel Black Gold’s legacy of denim and biker jackets. The Diesel Black Gold spring/summer 2016 collection sent down the runway was distinctly theirs, even though they used this new-to-the-house image of a woman, who “steps into her boyfriend’s wardrobe, takes a white shirt, wear it like a dress and throws a cool jacket over it,” as stated by house designer Andreas Melbostad.
The collection displays some unmistakable staple pieces for anyone’s wardrobe, yet displays them in a non-commercial way in most cases, much more suited for the runway it was presented on. The models’ hair was displayed in a mussed way, that hammers home the idea of the girl who is wearing her boyfriend’s button-down as a dress. It presents this idea that this girl has just left her boyfriend’s house after a passionate night, and grabbed one of his shirts to go run some errands – and is totally rocking it.
One issue that can be seen in the presentation of the collection is the use of handkerchief hemlines. While each of these pieces alone looks great on the women wearing them, together it can become a bit redundant. One can only wish there had been more diversity in the hemlines and the way the pieces were presented.
The house had created such a powerful character, and they could have portrayed her in such a larger world if they had created more silhouettes and more scenarios that woman would find herself in. There was a potential for a storyline here that I feel was missed out on, even though I find that the collection had amazingly unique pieces that I would personally wear if I had the backbone.
Diesel Black Gold took on a recurring theme in the fashion industry, and definitely succeeded in presenting a new take on the topic. The idea of the button-down shirt is common, and it takes real thought and premeditation in order for the collection to truly come alive. That being said, there are aspects of this collection that remake the button-down inspiration that only Diesel Black Gold would be able to pull off. The use of biker jackets and denim is something that not many people take on, but it is a staple in this particular house. The addition of these aspects brought the simple idea to a new level that may not have worked if it had come from any other designer.
Many pieces in the Diesel Black Gold spring 2016 collection connect back to the button-down theme not because they use the piece, but because they could look incredibly sexy if paired with one. Revealing pieces and thin-strapped dresses look great on their own for running errands or going out on the town, but if paired with her boyfriend’s button-down shirt would make for a sensual display of her body.
