There are two Ds here and the brothers are very much in tune with what women want, like and what’s the latest trends to work with. Dean and Dan Caten are as creative as a duo can come, making the DSquared2 spring/summer 2016 collection showcased on the Milan Fashion Week such a hit. Their inspirations? It appears bondage like harnesses that make the looks come out almost natural are what really dominated the runway. “High tech bondage,” the men say as they show off little hints of their collection from a backstage interview. Different gears ended up being the inspirations, from surfing gear to tech gear, bringing them all to meet fashion and produce their own blend. The girl they imagined here, and it is a girl and not a woman or lady, is fierce, independent and loves to beat the surf. She’s got sparkling platforms lashed with technical cords, looking as if she’s more than ready to attend a rave after hitting the wave.
The fabrics were interesting as well. According to fashion’s most famous twins, what they preferred was a “kind of like a neoprene fabric but a light neoprene, so it’s not like a heavy one. It’s binding, it’s stretchy, it breathes and it prints really well.” As such, the colors can come out very vibrant, lending to the typical nature of the DSquared2 brand. Needless to say, the whole of the DSquared2 spring 2016 collection has bright neon colors, here and there contrasted with a darker mood. They love overstatements, something we all knew already, and they love to surf, not something everyone was aware of. When combining these two aspects of their personalities, we have a collection that screams fashion but not always practical. We see tattoo body stockings and marabou feathers, against a backdrop of psychedelic imagery and quite a bit of purple sand. Looks like Barbados has ended up in Milan! We see knit tube dresses, clinging scuba dresses, three dimensional embroidering and lots of tropical prints.
The whole of the line has sexy, athletic silhouetted, while there was no end to the amount of color that was displayed. Out of it all, the most practical pieces were the slouchy black pants and the skinny tie-dye jeans, while the sequined jackets certainly had their place as well, particularly when you add a bandeau underneath. For those who wanted something more swim-worthy, we certainly had some suits on hand, either as triangle bikini tops or single pieces with cutouts in the right places.
“We are a picture image people so Instagram’s probably our favourite one. We love taking photographs anyway and sharing them with the world is kind of fun.” Social media plays a huge role for the twins as they enjoy making people laugh and inspiring them through their accounts, particularly with Instagram. They don’t keep someone else to do the postings either, Dean and Dan Caten preferring to keep their fans engaged personally. One particular thing we loved though is the fact that we saw models that had a bit of meat on them and were more of an athletic built than simply skinny, at least most of the time.
