The Elie Saab fashion shows are always like a never-ending dream that we are more than happy to be cuddling up for. The Lebanese designer seems to inherently understand a woman’s touch, character and needs, catering to every last one of her senses, from touch to vision, both of which help a woman taste the pleasure she feels wearing Elie Saab, while hearing the soft music of the dreamy fairy tale as it engulfs her taking in the fresh scent of perfection as these fashionable garments are paraded before the world on the Paris Fashion Week, enticing the female attendees like no other label can. Sweet Dreams Are Made of This is sung in the background by Marilyn Manson on a dark stage setting the mood for the Elie Saab fall/winter 2015-2016 collection dream show perfectly. While nothing can compare to his couture collection seen a few weeks ago, we can safely say that very few designers in general can compare to Elie Saab. There is something about being from Beirut, the city once known as Petit Paris, which truly gives the fashion world a new sense of style, combining the flavour of the Middle East and the West for a spectacular outcome.
This time around, Saab ensured his women displayed a proud grace and absolute confidence as they sashayed down the catwalk, first in military style outfits with a straight backed silhouette, metal buttons on the jackets polished to perfections and high heel lace up boots that make a mockery of the wartime antics. Of course, the Saab woman cannot be stoic and disciplined, stuck in a box and told what to do all her life; instead, we are presented with the true character that flows from the female soul, wherein the beauty of Mother Nature shows with all her splendour and incredible allure. This means that dresses appear embellished in ivy prints with richly hued lichen shimmer on the hems of the garment, while all the while there are bare branches forming the lace inserts down the sleeves of the shirts, woven into leather locks. From military cadet to sweet wood nymph, the Saab woman is but a wanderer of the world it seems, able to take on any form she wishes and don any mask of her choosing. She is, after all, sheer perfection, just like Lebanese designer Elie Saab himself.
The fairy tale romance of the woods is a beautiful narrative for the fashion designer who borders on genius when it comes to clothing creations, while the khaki dark color palette of the trailing capes and straight collars, the fur trims on coats and everything in between inspire a sense of feminine strength, inciting the will to protect whatever the forest may be hiding in its depths. Where is something darkly whimsical about the ball gowns with the defined waists and utilitarian zips down the back that give it an extra edge, while the woodland queens danced with wild abandon in billowing green gowns, splatters of shimmers down the arms and around the torso. This was a collection to be reckoned with and possibly the one with the best repertoire to grace the catwalk to date this season.
