Elizabeth and James Spring 2017 Collection Celebrates Minimalism

Established by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen in 2007, Elizabeth and James quickly entered the fashion industry with a blaze, developing a signature style many fall in love with. For their Elizabeth and James spring 2017 collection, the twins did, however, change a few things here and there, letting their personal styles shine singularly rather than mixing all together.

Although both Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen share a common passion for minimalism, which is always the focal point of their Elizabeth and James lines, for the Elizabeth and James spring/summer 2017 collection they translated minimalism to two different paths, namely a more bon-ton, romantic style and an urban-chic, street style-inspired one.

Mostly monochrome and cold-toned, aside from a soft yellow and a bright pink ensemble (the latter surprised us, indeed), the Elizabeth and James spring 2017 collection embraces all the patterns and motifs the Olsens became famous for, proving that the label is constantly evolving although remaining true to its own philosophy.

The line-up was overall packed with the Olsens’ signature art of layering, accentuated by the verticality and elongating figures of the clothing pieces. How they manage to always make layering look so cool, never miserable or too shabby is still a mystery.

Another signature element is to be found in the ample usage of denim and other raw, textured materials, which basically make the collection perfect not only for the hot summer days, but also for any rainy and humid day. The bon-ton staples feature, however, more lightweight fabrics, the loose and relaxed cuts of which are meant to be either worn singularly or layered with the collection’s oversized jackets and trench coats.

A sort of loungewear-meets-streetstyle completes the line-up with a slightly sporty, eased-up twist, offering us kimono-inspired jackets and billowy palazzo pants. The latter also infuse the collection with a cool sense of ease and movement thanks to their refined lateral slits, playing an appealing contrast with the line-up’s most rigid and rigorous ensembles.

Inevitably, the Elizabeth and James spring 2017 collection also features a standout Nineties-inspired attitude, updated with oversized leather belts, sheer, fresh materials and revisited lines. One of the collection’s key pieces is, in fact, a Nineties-inspired floor-length slip dress revamped with frilled, asymmetrical layers, the fancy, urban-chic lines of which make it possible to show it off from day to night.

Another key element is the single minimalistic suit, the sleek finishes and super plunging V-necklines of which are already overwhelming us with cool, heroin-chic vibes.
