Riccardo Tisci is taking street style extremely seriously and, after unveiling an urban-chic resort 2017 collection, he decided to take us down the streets with his Givenchy fall 2016 campaign. This campaign is particularly appealing, because it displays what appears to be Tisci’s mantra for the following months: keeping it real.
Captured by photographer Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and styled by Carine Roitfeld, the campaign features it-girls and models Lily Aldridge, Irina Shayk and Bella Hadid, who could be regarded as the third generation of supermodels (the previous one included Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer, among others, whose iconic personalities made them world-famous).
The Givenchy fall 2016 campaign chronicles the model squad outside of a yoga center in New York, an office building nearby Saks Fifth Avenue and other locations in NYC, as the trio chills out after (or before) a runway show. Although the models usually appear out of reach, thanks to Tisci, Bella, Lily and Irina look more real than ever, which undeniably makes Givenchy look more accessible too.
In the photos, the beauties are showcasing the collection’s black and red military jackets with golden finishes and elegant tailored trousers, while their hair is sensually styled in slicked-back hairdos. Each of them carries what will probably become one of fall’s it bags, the boxy Horizon purse, which is a geometric black or red handbag with a wide buckle latch.
The looks, along with the locations, perfectly embody both Tisci’s street-style makeover and Givenchy’s signature sophisticated style, emphasizing the Italian fashion designer’s terrific ability to intertwine such different attitudes together like they have always meant to go hand in hand.
“Now you see a lot of girls mixing streetwear with Givenchy bags, Chanel bags,” he told the WWD. “This campaign shows that I’m keeping my eyes fixed on what’s happening out there in reality. And that, I think, is my strength. My first thing is being real and looking at what is happening out there.”
The campaign’s looks, as we might deduce from Tisci’s own words, could also symbolize women’s strength and power, along with their accomplishments in life. The edgy Egyptian motifs of Givenchy’s fall 2016 runway collection exude strength in and of themselves, and the way all this has been brought to life through this campaign only intensifies the opulence of the designs.
“Pure elegance, powerful women. As well, I think what’s happening in America now is that women are getting more and more power and I’m happy about that because, in certain countries, women are still abused and killed because they are women,” he explained.
