Jason Wu has announced the conception of a new sister label, GREY Jason Wu, which comes at a very exciting point in the 33-year-old designer’s life. Just this past weekend, Wu married his long-term partner Gustavo Rangel in Tulum, Mexico. The lovely wedding was featured on Wu’s Instagram feed, but just on Tuesday morning he decided to use Instagram to announce his new label – before the honeymoon could even take place!
GREY Jason Wu will be releasing its first collection for spring, and according to Wu, the designs will be inspired by the personal style of his friends. Knowing the fashionable ladies Wu is friends with (Caroline Issa, Diane Kruger, Jane Keltner de Valle) it isn’t hard to assume the clothes will be sophisticated but not stuffy, easygoing yet whimsical, and he will clearly be skirting the line on many aspects such as those. To affirm this belief, Wu suggested the clothes in the line will be “seasonless,” “neither too edgy nor sweet,” and always with a “sense of relaxed sophistication.” There are many potential directions for this basic outline, so we will be in for a fashionable surprise no mater what. His Instagram introduction post for the new label’s account definitely had our brains turning.
“Introducing GREY Jason Wu, a new sister collection created by Jason Wu born from his desire to dress his friends, inspired by their dynamic personal style. ‘I often look to my friends for inspiration and I created this collection for women who look for beautifully made, well-considered clothes that have a sense of whimsy and uncomplicated chic that suit their everyday lives.'”
Let fabulous fashion live on; with Jason Wu addressing the specific fashion needs and desires of his close friends, the output will be exceedingly chic and classy, while staying fun and modern. There will likely be a great balance between Wu’s iconic design aesthetic and style of his friends, such as those named earlier. The announcement stretched on from its introductory post, tacking on two other posts featuring the words of the iconic designer himself.
“As the Jason Wu collection evolved over the last few years, I felt that there was room for a sister collection that very much addressed the needs of women who look for a beautiful, seasonless wardrobe hat is neither too edgy or sweet. There is a sense of relaxed sophistication with thoughtful details that is the basis for GREY Jason Wu.”
And finally, in a third introductory post, Wu addresses the core reason behind creating his sister line, and whom he chose to work with for its creation.
“I’ve always loved the idea of collaboration, and with GREY Jason Wu I have the opportunity to work with some amazingly talented people. For the first collection, I asked artist Hunt Slonem to be my first collaborator, and I’ve translated his famous bunnies into printed chiffon, a multi-colored jacquard, and embroidery on knitwear. Hunt’s work is charming, full of life, and so clever-qualities that perfectly sum up GREY Jason Wu.”
For a collection of garments for everyday women, what else can be said than #GREYLaVie? The oh-so-clever hashtag conceived for this collection proves unforgettable in this venture, and will likely make a big hit on social media.
His first collection’s collaboration with Slonem marks a trend for the brand, as Wu plans to collaborate with many artists in the future to create various prints and fabrics for his garments. This new line will be available on its own website, greyjasonwu.com, and also through retailers Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom once June comes around. Prices can be expected to range between $295 and $1395 – looking fabulous always comes with a price, after all!
