The Italian idiosyncratic fashion designer Alessandro Michele, who was appointed the creative director of Gucci in January this year, is now to receive the prestigious International Designer Fashion Award at the British Fashion Awards that should take place later this month in London Coliseum.
Despite the fact that the talented designer has presented only four collections for Gucci since his appointment, he managed to breathe a new life into the brand’s aesthetics quite rapidly. When the fashion house’s previous creative director Frida Giannini quite unexpectedly left her position, the president of Gucci, Marco Bizzarri came up with a reasonable and wise decision to invite talented Alessandro Michele, who had been working for the brand since 2002 as the creative director of accessories, to take that vacant position and to overwhelm the collections with his retro vibes.
Soon enough Frida Giannini’s hard and accurate cutouts were replaced by Alessandro’s romantic ruffles and bows, floral appliqués and asymmetrical hemlines. But the best of best was still to come when Michele started to demonstrate what androgynous attitude is in reality. Gucci’s whole four fashion shows brought about a range of women attired as men and a range of men attired as women, thus blurring all the boundaries between the genders. The very latest Gucci spring/summer 2016 womenswear collection infused with eccentric and bohemian vibes entirely revealed his great talent and got the name “Gucci geek chic”.
Alessandro himself has stated once that the credit of his great success goes largely to Marco Bizzarri, who has served as a real “Pygmalion” for him to appoint an unknown designer the creative director of so luxurious a fashion house. Actually, the designer has huge experience under his belt but only working backstage. Now we also say many thanks to Marco Bizzarri for replenishing the fashion world with fresh new silhouettes and designs. Many celebrities have also fallen in love with Alessandro Michele’s unique style. Sienna Miller, Keira Knightley and Dakota Johnson are only some celebs that have been spotted this year to walk the Red Carpet with Gucci pieces.
On November 23 at the British Fashion Awards ceremony, Alessandro Michele will get that coveted award, which earlier received such giants in the fashion world as Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld and Ralph Lauren. “I’m honoured and still a little incredulous,” he says.
“Alessandro Michele is a phenomenon at Gucci,” says Natalie Massenet, chairman of the British Fashion Council. “His exciting, eclectic aesthetic has made an overnight impact on global fashion trends. It is not just that he has made the brand covetable and the product so desirable. He has also reinvigorated the retail experience bringing back playfulness and magic to the flagship store. This is a man who has his customer in his heart and celebrates them.”
Victoria Beckham, Christopher Kane and JW Anderson have also been nominated to take the award. The same day in London Coliseum, Karl Lagerfeld will also get a reward for outstanding achievements, while Nick Knight is to take the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator.
