If you’re one of those people who are constantly wishing for the things you see on Instagram, the social media giant is looking to make things a lot easier on their users by adding the new Instagram shopping feature that allows people to shop through the platform next week to make getting what you want much easier. The announcement came on Tuesday, with Instagram revealing that they have partnered with 20 different US based retailers and great brands that will be integrating the shopping posts.
Certain photos will now appear to users with a ‘Tap to View Products’ notice on the bottom left corner and once tapped, up to five different products in the photo will appear along with the names and prices of each. Once an individual product is selected, the platform will go to a separate page that is still on Instagram but contains more detailed information.
If the user is ready to purchase the item, all they have to do is tap on ‘Shop Now’, which will take them directly to the retail page to make the purchase through the retail account. It sounds complex but a look at the screenshots shows that it really is not.
According to the announcement on Instagram’s business blog, “knowing that Instagrammers are open to discovery on the platform, and that people take time to better understand the products they’re interested in, this test gives our community valuable steps along their shopping journey before they make a purchase.”
The shopping feature will not be available right away, but soon as Instagram will be running tests on selected U.S. accounts first, then adding in more options and innovations worldwide. The addition of wish lists and recommendations is already in line to be added to the upcoming releases. Instagram and the partnered retailers and brands are looking to get a chunk of the holiday shopping money people are sure to be spending this season, with companies like Warby Parker and Kate Spade New York included.
This is an exciting development that could go very well in favor of Instagram, their partnered brands and retailers and even the users. The opportunity to shop on their favorite app can make a lot of Instagrammers very happy, which will make Instagram happy and likely cause a further roll out of features as more money comes in.
We’ll see what happens, but as a concept, it is pretty cool and efficient, though it will likely cause people to spend a lot more than they anticipated. Perhaps they will have a points system or loyalty program or something similar, as well as discounts everyone loves. Either way, we will all find out very soon.
