If you’re a fan of Isabel Marant, we have both good news and bad news for you. Which one would you like to hear first? To end the story with the positive note, I think we’ll start with the bad one first. According to Reuters, Isabel Marant might not be so independent in the coming year. She is reportedly in talks with Eurazeo, a French investment company, to sell the controlling stake of the brand.
Before getting all confused and panicky, let’s admit that these are just rumors for now. However, it doesn’t sound like a bad deal at all, especially considering Isabel Marant’s $216 million annual revenue from sales. Eurazeo, on the other hand, would help the brand go global and bigger … and better! Sounds fair, doesn’t it? By the way, Eurazeo has a pretty good portfolio with worldwide names like Desigual, Vestiaire Collective, and Moncler.
However, this doesn’t mean we’re losing the brand or what it offers. In fact, after having a few pretty good seasons (including the H&M collaboration in 2013) and becoming globally famous for her Dicker boots, this Parisian designer might be expanding her brand, and that’s the good news! You might see more of her awesome fashion in your city.
According to the source, the deal is nowhere to be sealed yet, but the reason behind the process is expansion of the collection and the stores. Marant reportedly wants to raise more funds to expand her collection, especially the leather goods (more leather is always better!).
Are you thinking these are just rumors that might never come to life? You might be right, but here’s what has been happening recently.
We’ve seen more Isabel Marant stores opening in Hong Kong and San Francisco. A second store is planned to open on Madison Avenue in New York City, according to a report by Racked NY. This can happen as soon as early next year. 3 new stores, heightened attention, and a Reuters report; something is clearly escalating.
If these steps haven’t convinced you yet, how about what Marant told WWD in April this year, “I’m very happy about being independent, being sold in the nicest department stores all over the world. But my aim with my label is not to be on all the corners. I would like to keep a certain confidentiality even if it’s not, really. I think when things become too much it becomes a bit disgusting.”
Confidentiality it is! Wait, there’s more. On the same occasion, she said, “It’s not our next step for sure…I’m not saying no because I never know what’s going to happen.”
So, a possibility always stays a possibility. If we don’t see these rumors come to life any time soon, they can still surprise us later. Whatever happens, expansion is great news from Isabel Marant, provided that there won’t be drastic changes to the content of her fashion. Fingers crossed for more Marant soon!
