The spring/summer 2016 fashion campaign season is drawing to a close and Hedi Slimane chose to go out with the bang. The young fashion designer, at the helm of Saint Laurent since 2012 (despite the rumors about a possible departure from the French fashion house) hit it big choosing Jane Birkin, one of the most iconic actresses and trendsetters in the world, to pose for Saint Laurent’s SS 2016 campaign. The 69-year old British model and actress may be the muse for one of the most iconic Hermes bags, but has just lent her (stunningly beautiful) image for Saint Lauren’s most artistic campaign.
Lensed by Hedi Slimane himself, whose terrific skills include photography too, the shoots are in black & white, brilliantly enhancing Birkin’s natural beauty. The campaign consists of two portraits, which respectively feature Jane Birkin smiling and looking at the camera, and another one with the charming actress giving the camera a come-hither stare that perfectly emphasizes her deep connection and roots with the art world.
The ultimate fashion icon is also wearing one of Saint Lauren’s most famed pieces, Le Smoking Tuxedo, which was designed by Yves Saint Laurent in 1966 and not only represented a turning point for the fashion industry but also let a new era begin. As much as Yves Saint Lauren helped women feel more independent and more prone to wearing whatever they liked, Jane Birkin encouraged many young ladies in the Seventies to enjoy their free-spirited sides and have fun creating their own personal style. And surely the campaign revives the immortal style of Jane Birkin, who still sports her signature thick bangs and wavy hair, which looks just perfect in combination with the Smoking Tuxedo and the black & white post-editing effects.
Photographed by the French designer just a few days after the long-awaited Saint Laurent fall 2016 show, the 69-year-old beauty is just one of the many icons Slimane chose for his campaigns, which look more like an artistic project rather than a mere merchandising campaign. Saint Laurent’s list of celebrity-muses includes songwriter, singer and painter Joni Mitchell, Grunge-Rock Queen Courtney Love, industrial metal’s mysterious star Marilyn Manson and Sonic Youth’s former bass player Kim Gordon. Aside from having fronted Slimane’s projects, these personalities also have in common the fact that they have not only represented different eras (starting with Birkin’s Sixties and Seventies fashion influences and ending up with Manson’s early 00s), but have also influenced entire generations with their unconventional, rebellious and independent spirits. The latest Jane Birkin x Saint Laurent campaign confirms once again Slimane’s willingness to not only work for the fashion industry, but also for the art world in general.
As for Saint Laurent’s next portraits, the brand has recently announced its newest brand ambassador: Cara Delevingne (who already worked for Saint Laurent for the fall 2013 campaign). Given the fact that the Birkin x Saint Laurent campaign is a piece of art indeed, Cara Delevingne has big shoes to fill in!
