As was to be expected, the wait wasn’t long as to finding out whether or not the rumors about Karl Lagerfeld‘s departure from Chanel were true. And, as was also expected, the rumors have been denied. The rumors swept across the Internet the day before yesterday, in similar fashion to several other sets of rumors on the same matter over the years. With 33 years at the helm of Chanel and at 82 years of age, the rumors seemed to hold more plausibility than in years past, but with his adamant outlook on continuing working until he can no longer, Karl Lagerfeld’s retirement rumors still seemed highly unlikely. Chanel responded to requests from British Vogue, and issued a statement to the fashion news outlet.
“The rumors about Mr. Lagerfeld discontinuing the collections and the cruise collection show in Cuba being the last are unsubstantiated,” said the spokesperson of the luxury label.
This whole mess started due to Page Six, a tabloid website based in the U.S. Writer Richard Johnson wrote his piece based off of a statement he had heard from a friend of Lagerfeld, who had said, “He’s really tired. He’s not doing well and he’s ready to stop.”
Now, perhaps there is a semblance of truth in that statement; by all means, Lagerfeld (and any other designer, for that matter) should be tired, but that doesn’t necessarily denote intent to walk away. More than likely, the tabloid was just doing what all tabloids do best: cause a mass stir based on a small suggestion. That’s not to say tabloids in the industry are without worth, however.
We know the day will come when Lagerfeld will revoke his position at Chanel, but that day is not today. Rather than slowing down, as might be expected of one of such a matured age within the industry, it seems the workload of the iconic designer is only continuing to grow in size. He is performing personal photography work, on top of his 33 years at Chanel, his 50 years at Fendi, and his work for his eponymous label, which he began back in 2000.
The man has a lot of creativity stored in his brain, and thankfully he is determined to serve a full sentence in the fashion industry, as a highly-contributing member. His work for Chanel and Fendi alone keep him moving, with one based on France and the other in Italy; in fact, just this week he was spotted in Paris, and Kendall Jenner even sent him a Snapchat from her photoshoot.
It’s almost comical to see how well-connected and cutting edge Lagerfeld is; 82-year-old and he is still in his prime!
