Red and black were the main colors that took over the runway on Wednesday when the Marchesa fall/winter 2015-2016 collection took to the stage during the final batch of the New York Fashion Week shows. It was all about a dark, sensual elegance that glorified roses and brought a flush to a woman’s cheeks with their incredible designs. There was a certain Old World sophistication to be found among the line, as the label gave us one red carpet gown after another. The show began and ended with black numbers covered by red floral pieces, while throughout the collection we were given the option of going light grey, white or purple as well. There was something about the manner of dress and styling that was so entirely Twenties Great Gatsby-ish that we were kept completely enthralled as the models stepped onto the catwalk one after the other, particularly when taking into account the beautifully coiffed short shorn hairs of the ladies on stage.
Last year was their 10th anniversary and now they are back on the New York Fashion Week runway. Marchesa, that gorgeous brand specializing in high end women’s clothing, was established in 2004 by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig and has become a favourite for many a Hollywood star to grace the red carpet. We are talking Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Bullock, Olivia Wilde, Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, Miley Cyrus, Kate Hudson, Rihanna, Eva Longoria and so many more! In the US, Marchesa is only sold in high-end department stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Named after 20th century eccentric Italian heiress Marchesa Casati Stampa di Soncino Luisa, her famous statement that she wants to be a living work of art has inspired the modern designers to truly follow in those steps and make each woman they dress a living work of art. And a work of art they have created indeed!
There seemed to be some allusion to an opium dream as well, with the bright red poppies calling out to those who would listen. There was swinging lace present in half the collection, while ostrich feathered ruffled also made the cut. One piece even had a series of crystal ropes dangling, making it a perfect red carpet piece for the lucky celebrity to found it beyond captivating. It was truly a dreamy piece, something that inspired thoughts of Alice in Wonderland in a more realistic setting.
High cut slits and low plunging necklines definitely found their way into the collection as well, ensuring Marchesa is not left behind on the latest trends. We even saw a dress made wholly of tulle, as if a woman is engulfed in a grey cloud of wonder. The trouser combinations caught our attention as well, particularly the silver and white fringed option with the halter top and black satin waist. Each piece had a touch of sexy without overly doing it, while also managing to look spectacular on the runway. We cannot wait to see which stars will decide to wear Marchesa over the next few months!
