Maria Sharapova stars in the new NikeLab x Sacai winter 2015 collection, and she’s a head turner! The latest collaboration between the American sportswear colossus and the Japanese fashion house blatantly follows the athleisure trend, with its skillful mix of comfy and stylish clothes. Such collaboration gave similar results back in March too, and now this interesting all American-Japanese collection officially shares its results in stores and online starting with November 5 (while for the holiday collection we have to wait until December 10, 2015).
Russian beauty and five-time tennis Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova models the collection, proving once again that she feels quite at ease in front of the camera. Regarding this collaboration, Sharapova, who recently admitted to having been one of those naïve teenagers obsessed with trends, told Vogue: “What I like about the NikeLab x Sacai collection are the proportions—all the mixtures of materials and textures and the pleating. There is a lot of volume in the pieces, so you can layer them really well from season to season. It can be a transitional dress that you wear with sneakers. Or in the winter, you can put pieces together with leggings. It’s a versatile collection that provides you with a lot of options.”
Such a variety of options is what Chitose Abe, creative director of Sacai, has always sought to achieve. Abe, who launched Sacai in 1999 but didn’t hold her fashion show up until 2011, is internationally renowned for her exquisite interpretation of classic pieces (which often come from the Japanese tradition), like deconstructed outerwear pieces and pleated skirts. She also loves to play with different fabrics and textiles, which make each one of her pieces absolutely one-of-a-kind. Sharapova could not resist the great diversity of fabrics that makes the Nikelab x Sacai winter 2015 collection so special, saying: “For me it’s all about the details in clothes, and that all comes down to the way that a piece is stitched. Materials are very important.”
Chitose also seems be more than enthusiastic about this fall/winter 2015-2016 collaboration, whose final results surpassed all expectations. “Sacai’s vision is to take classic styles that are familiar to everyone, such as the cardigan, shirt or jacket, and play with the fabrics and silhouettes. I applied this same design philosophy to the NikeLab x sacai collection, expressing the style of Nike that everyone knows through sacai’s eye.”
Abe’s high quality mash-up of unconventional style and elegance is perfectly combined here with NikeLab’s sporty approach, still making Sacai the best candidate for such collaborations season after season. Launched in 2014, Nikelab offers an updated interaction with fashion innovations and sportswear trends, making them more suitable for day-to-day needs. To clarify better such a message and purpose, Nikelab has so far always chosen to celebrate sports-women, whose dedication and sense of style set a good example to many teenagers and women.
This collection (with price tags ranging from $175 to $400) offers oversized bomber jackets, super oversized skirts made of wool, slick joggers (which appear to be one of this fall’s hottest trends), and pleated sweatshirts, which probably represent this year athleisure epitome. Thanks to her confident look and athletic body, Sharapova perfectly embodies both Nikelab’s sportswear style and Sacai’s unconventional view on fashion, going that extra mile Nikelab x Sacai needed for its collection.
