Miu Miu, the high fashion brand of women’s clothing and accessories founded in 1993 as a subsidiary to the famous Prada, named after the nickname given to Miuccia Prada, the head of the label, has just launched the wonderful Miu Miu pre-fall 2015 collection and it is definitely a hit! While the name of the brand itself is positively adorable, the collections presented are certainly not the young girl kind of cute you may be led to imagine. Even so, Miu Miu has been known to be the medium through which Miuccia Prada expresses her more girly, more youthful impulses, though this pre-fall 2015 collection seems to have been inspired by Sherlock Holmes and the state of England at the time period. Boy scout kerchiefs from the 1920s and Holmes style detective hats rule the collection it seems, while walking shorts are being endorsed in a major way. Even the capelet coats are straight from the Scotland Yard.
Prada once had a reputation for creating rather “ugly-chic” garments and it appears that this time around for Miu Miu, there is once again a nod in that direction, with retro quirky prints and short dresses with patch pockets. We are looking at fuzzy sweaters with sparkling Lurex threads and crocodile-stamped patent leather raincoats that are a definite must have for any Prada and Miu Miu fan.
There’s something rather intriguing about the way Miuccia Prada takes seemingly unrelated themes and references and spins them together into a captivating narrative, working in multiple contrasts. In the Miu Miu pre-fall 2015 collection alone, we have masculine inspirations with ‘60s upholstery print dresses, without all the froth and grandeur other designers showcase. Cozy jacquard grandpa sweaters have snuck in and pretend that they go with the flow, while jaunty caps and floral knee socks entirely set the line apart from all others.
When considering the trends across the board, there’s an overwhelming amount of black coloring, from black chunky heeled Mary Janes to knee high black stockings, black midi length shorts and black headwear, black kerchiefs and black jackets, as well as black short cape coats worn over the longer pieces that really throw us into the past centuries fashions. In the meantime, we also have British checks, mahogany and grey hues to the footwear and intriguing kaleidoscope style prints also appear and give a splash of life to the otherwise dreary colors.
Shining animal print jackets with patching caps and patching lace up chunky heeled half boots, complete with black and grey knit knee-length socks and those messenger boy shorts underneath to accentuate the knobby kneed legs of the wearer all come together to create a look that’s somehow too young and whimsical while also playing well at looking positively chic in an adorable kind of way. The jackets themselves come in bright firefighter red and pale, creamy hues, definitely looking as British in demeanour as possible.
Other looks include alligator skin cape coats as well, with matching caps and similar outlook. The eyes are forever drawn to the footwear though, with its red and creamy snakeskin designs mixed with a typical utilitarian lace up boot. Those handbags themselves are huge! They are, however, great for business needs and the added red lining on the smaller piece keeps it looking in sharp contrast to its background. A medium sized red and black version to these chunkier handbags is also available. In general, the Miu Miu pre-fall 2015 collection keeps to similar designs with swapped materials to create intriguing combinations.
