While some fashion lines presented on the New York Fashion Week runways have been more of stark contrast and singular colors, others such as the Naeem Khan spring/summer 2016 collection are hard to forget with their intricate detailing and use of traditional culture folk designs. While some celebrated a decade worth of work, Naeem Khan preferred to mark his 60th birthday in a burst of color that transported the creative minds to Mexico. And then there is the whole Mediterranean aspect happening, where it has become increasingly clear that the flowers have bewitched the designer, rather fully it appears. It is fascinating to watch the bloom of lilacs and marigold, but even more so for Khan to be able to so beautifully transcribe the process onto his incredibly breathtaking ornate gowns.
Known as one who often ends up dressing celebrities for their red carpet events, Naeem Khan has failed to disappoint us once again, instead leaving us catching our breaths at the channeling of fashion icons such as Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Jackie Kennedy. His mindset? How would these ladies dress for a party while languishing on vacation?
Forget the simpler designs that took over the catwalk over the past few days. Forget that you know Coach or Boss or Victoria Beckham. Forget Alexander Wang, Rodarte and all the rest. Truthfully, the only designers who come close to comparing with Khan include the Lebanese Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad. The pieces are lovely but might be a little too embellished in some places, rather reminding us of cartoon princesses and childhood fantasies. We are certainly enjoying the colorful embellishments on the mini dress with long sleeved cape combinations though. The cape effect appears on some royal pieces as well, wherein the skirts have given way to briefs instead. Strapless dresses with gloves and matching accessories in the form of large hoops and headwear are certainly ones to covet, particularly the simpler deeply golden design with the silken fabric clinging to your form. The line-up had a very grand and regal effect to it.
One thing that was a little off was the way the time periods kept shifting and the focus kept wavering. While the regality of the pieces could be not put into question, what does seem to catch the attention of the individual admiring the Naeem Khan spring 2016 collection is slips into a retro spin or the imbalance in aesthetics when the additional embellishments take away from the beauty of the pieces themselves. The collection barely contained itself with the incredibly designs brimming over, including rich embroideries and intricate weaving, along with those colors that are so bright, you have to wonder if they are for day or night. The vibrant hues included everything from sunset yellows to bright orange and pink, while azure, lilac, red and green swam under the waters. From red lace to tan raffia, floral caftans to paisley rompers, it was certainly a sight to behold as the ladies sashayed down the walkway with chins held high.
