Nicholas K Fall/Winter 2016-2017 RTW – NYFW

The enigmatic fashion siblings, brother and sister Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, who stand behind the urban brand Nicholas K, presented their fall/winter 2016-2017 collection on the first day of the New York Fashion Week. A very intriguing start of the week, as the designers introduce their unique inspiration, different from what we’ve seen on the fashion radar so far. The inspiration was drawn from Arcosanti, an experimental town built in Arizona. The community was started by Paolo Soleri according to the concept of a compact city, where ecology meets architecture in perfect unision. We clearly saw the concept enclosed in all Nicholas K designs presented this week.

Nicholas K Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 RTW - NYFW

“When I saw it for the first time, what struck me is how modern it still feels, even though it was built in the 70s,” Nicholas revealed more about their city-muse to Vogue. “It’s nomadic, futuristic, and most important, it’s sustainable.”

What we loved about the Nicholas K fall 2016 RTW collection is how in tune it is with the brand’s philosophy. After it was announced as a finalist at CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge, we are happy to see the sustainable theme continue on the catwalk.

Dusty, flowy and sexy… these were the looks we saw on Nicholas K catwalk at NYFW. Perfectly draped dresses and blouse-pants combos, a look designed to make an impression and tell a story… All this was brought together with belts, which were the main points of styles.

See-through wrap tops, one-shoulder blouses, low V-cuts, and more. Forget the skinny look, Nicholas K is all about space around your legs and drop-crotch pants. While the main theme is played throughout the collection, the supporting details are diverse with every look. Zippered pockets and coats added a military touch to the outfits, making this the ultimate uniform of the futuristic army we might have in a few centuries.

Completing the desert look, the stylists have put considerable effort in expanding the theme with leather bandanas, slip-on mules, and buckles… lots of buckles. In addition to everything you’ve seen so far, these outfits were also a puzzle… with so many layers packed onto one another; you will spend a few good minutes trying to separate one wearable piece from the other.

The colors of the new Nicholas K fall/winter 2016 collection were definitely not for the fans of flashy statements. Staying true to the initial inspiration, the collection embodied the entire desert, the dry tundra, with the chopped mosaic sand. Now, take this entire idea and translate it into Nicholas K’s color palette, ranging from sandy white to shady grays all the way to deep and mysterious purple, which the brand calls “nightshade,” and finally the pitch black.

The shades took the lead roles one after another as the collection ran down the catwalk. Despite the choice of bright and dark colors, the outfits were kept monochromatic, all sandy or all black. We think you’ll agree, this entire show was right out of Mad Max (if you’ve seen the movie), only Charlize Theron was missing from the party. The additional styling details like straps, leather knuckle and arm guards – because we all need those, right? – left us in amazement over the new world of Nicholas K.

Is it really going to be that hot and futuristic next year? More than possible, if these outfits get out to the streets of the fashion capital of the Western world, the great old New York City!
