Pantone 2016 Colors of The Year: Rose Quartz & Serenity

For the first time in Pantone’s history of picking a color of the year, there have been two hues chosen for 2016. These are two positively gorgeous hues, both of which have been used in the spring/summer 2016 collections by designers everywhere. The Pantone 2016 colors of the year chosen are Rose Quartz and Serenity, the former a compassionate and gentle pink that conveys a sense of composure and the latter a rather weightless and airy hue that brings us the sky above, their combination reminding us of the dusk and the dawn.

Generally, at the beginning of every year, the Pantone Inc. corporation headquartered in New Jersey proclaims one color to be the main color of the year after specialists in the industry get together twice a year in a European capital and after much presentation and debate, one particular hue is chosen for the upcoming year. So for the summer of 2016, the color was actually chosen in the spring on 2015. The colors have been chosen since the year 2000 and it started with cerulean, with reds and blue-greens dominating for a while, the inclusion of purples only making things all the more intriguing, Blue Iris coming in during the year of 2008. If we were to look over the past 5 years, the colors of the year by Pantone have included:

• 2011: Honeysuckle
• 2012: Tangerine Tango
• 2013: Emerald
• 2014: Radiant Orchid
• 2015: Marsala

Both the Pantone colors for 2016 bring feelings of relaxation and respite in times that can be turbulent, as these past years in world geography have shown us. They can be used with all finishes though especially love shimmering silks, metallic and glossy as appealing as the matte otherwise. The combination of Rose Quartz and Serenity is a balancing act, soothing to the soul while combining warmth with a gentle coolness, the sun’s rays with the condensation in the clouds in mind.

It appears that the double pick rather coincides with the gender bending qualities that designers have been displaying of late, the blurs in genders becoming all the more prevalent, coinciding with the societal movements towards gender equality and a certain fluidity. Customers understand the use of color to express thoughts and emotions as well as inner understanding of life itself, while the Rose Quartz with Serenity combination is meant to become an antidote to everyday stressors, both welcomed by our psyches and subconscious sensors as a manner by which we can enjoy our lives.

“Rose quartz is not baby pink,” Leatrice Eiseman told the Wall Street Journal. “It doesn’t have that wimpy feel.” And while the color duo does have a rather baby shower feel to it, it transcends all that and is a lot more heavenly than we realize.

While all this talk of gender blurring is enjoyable, we can most certainly say that wearing these lovely hues will be making us feel like we are closer to what we deem as Heaven, that dimension where life is perfection itself and everything is soft, sweet and positively tranquil, the way we strive to have our current lives be.
