Confirmed: Phoebe Philo Not Leaving Celine

Phoebe Philo’s fans, rejoice! Céline’s creative director, at the helm of the fashion house since 2008, is not going anywhere, and she will keep on collaborating with the maison for (hopefully) a long time yet. Rumors that Phoebe Philo was stepping down from her role at Céline began spreading since August last year, becoming even more persistent a few days ago. Thanks to sources close to WWD, however, we can finally heave a sigh of relief.

Confirmed: Phoebe Philo Not Leaving Celine

WWD has been granted access to an internal memo from Céline (which was signed by the label’s CEO Marco Gobbetti and Philo herself), issued by the company to employees, which undeniably confirms the British fashion designer is staying put at Céline. Both the French House and the designer “are more motivated and committed than ever to their partnership and will continue to create beautiful products,” reportedly stated the memo.

This memo also throws a major shade at all those journalists and “dubious sources” that quickly jumped the gun before actually getting any kind of confirmation from the sources themselves. The memo states that the reports were “based on rumors, not truths” and are the result of “poor journalism”. Ever wondered how to elegantly formulate a clear position on a thorny point? Here we are with “How to remove a pebble from your shoe, 101, Céline’s edition”.

Lucky for us, Céline’s headquarters have finally come forward to stop those sources fuelling the gossip mill, as they were really causing panic among the fashion enthusiasts. It would have been indeed a huge loss for Céline to have Philo step down from her position, as she managed to transform the label into a huge global phenomenon. Before Philo’s arrival, Céline was floundering under the helm of American fashion designer Michael Kors, who left it in extreme conditions in 2004. Graciously rising from the ashes like a fashionist phoenix, Céline literally built an empire out of Philo’s accessory line, the bag, purses and clutches of which are now considered some of the most desirable It bags all over the world.

So, what is press-shy Philo doing aside from bringing her minimalistic points of view back into fashion? She is, of course, getting ready for the long-awaited Céline FW 2016 collection, while at the same time working on a new interior concept for the label’s showrooms in an imposing 17th-century mansion on the Rue Vivienne, Paris. We all know she always puts family first (she works nearby her family house, in England, and not at Céline’s studios in Paris), and what the rumors spread was that she was considering opting out due to the label’s stressful schedules, but at this point we are now relieved to know it was never a problem for the label in the first place.

As for the other rumors spreading around the fashion industry (such as those stating that Hedi Slimane is very likely about to depart from Saint Laurent’s creative direction), the truths are still blurry.
