If you are following the news about Raf Simons’ new career path after Dior, you should know rumors regarding him about to be appointed as Calvin Klein’s creative director are intensifying day after day. Every single online fashion magazine has been covering the topic, with more and more sources stepping out claiming they knew the truth. Well, things were finally made official a few minutes ago: Raf Simons has been confirmed as Calvin Klein’s newest creative director!
It has been a long and winding road for Raf Simons and Calvin Klein, and it is indeed worth taking stock of the entire situation.
Ever since Raf Simons departed from Dior, all of us – fashion enthusiasts, have never stopped wondering about where he would concentrate all of his creative intuitions and efforts in the near future. All things considered, Lanvin, Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta were/are looking for new creative directors, and many thought (and still think), Simons would be a perfect fit for such Maisons.
Such speculations, which began in November last year, did not however include a possible appointment of Raf Simons as Calvin Klein’s creative director, both due to the label’s and designer’s different aesthetics, and due to bureaucratic reasons. Regarding this topic, a close source revealed to WWD, back in November 2015, that “Simons has a stringent, non-compete with Dior, and if Calvin Klein were interested in him, it would be a long time before the company could hire him, barring an early release from his Dior agreement.”
Fast forward to April 2016, when Calvin Klein fired designers Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli and claimed to be looking for a single person to lead both the men’s and women’s collection, the thought of Raf Simons being Calvin Klein’s new creative director didn’t sound that extraordinary anymore.
During an interview with WWD, Calvin Klein himself revealed that those at the CK headquarters, namely the PVH Corporation Company, “are doing something that I had hoped they would have done, which is replace me. Find someone who can with a singular vision oversee everything that is creative. They won’t announce [who it is] publicly because it’s under contract. But the whole industry knows.”
Now, if reading through the lines could be a professional job, those who translated “it’s under contract” to “Raf Simons is still legally under a stringent, non-compete contract with Dior and thus cannot be officially appointed as CK’s creative director” should really get a salary increase.
This contract was in fact reportedly going to expire by the end of July, which means that now that August has gloriously begun, Raf is freely able to join Calvin Klein. WWD, whose sources are always the most authoritative (just think about the whole Maria Grazia Chiuri case), began claiming the PVH Corp was waiting for this week to announce the big news, and it was right!
As captioned by a freshly released post on Calvin Klein’s Instagram account, the label has officially announced the Belgian designer as “Chief Creative Officer of the brand, effective immediately.”
Simons is thus going to lead “the creative strategy of the Calvin Klein brand globally across the Calvin Klein Collection, Calvin Klein Platinum, Calvin Klein, Calvin Klein Jeans, Calvin Klein Underwear and Calvin Klein Home brands. As part of his role as Chief Creative Officer, Mr. Simons will oversee all aspects of Design, Global Marketing and Communications, and Visual Creative Services.”
Raf Simons’ first Calvin Klein collections will debut for the fall 2017 season, and we do have a lot of expectations already!
