Rebecca Taylor Fall/Winter 2016-2017 RTW – NYFW

When a designer is moved or inspired, it shows prominently within their work. Rebecca Taylor‘s ready-to-wear showing for fall/winter 2016 at New York Fashion Week was paying homage to Taylor’s great aunt Jean, who passed away at 100-year-old earlier last year. To Taylor, Jean was a “second grandmother” and her work as a printmaker back in the ‘60s and ‘70s significantly impacted Taylor’s style and aesthetic as a designer.

“She was a great influence for me,” explained Taylor to Vogue. “She was a colorist and print designer in London in the ‘20s and ‘30s, and worked for houses like Liberty and Laura Ashley.” It seems style is something that runs in Taylor’s family. Two great fashion talents in one family is a remarkable thing, especially seeing Taylor’s execution with patterns and prints, especially used to pay respect to her great aunt’s memory in this unique collection.

Everything about the final collection was simply lovely. The classic, vintage silhouettes were mixed with timeless blouses, dresses, and some vintage denim. Above everything, the garments in the line were romantic, which is a must for Taylor. Staple ruffled blouses and sweet lace were used in the collection.

“I’ve never met a Victorian shirt I didn’t like,” the designer told WWD. A pair of floral pointed-toe booties was a cohesive trend through the Rebecca Taylor fall 2016 RTW collection, and proved to be an interesting decision, as it seemed a little eccentric to pair with certain ensembles. Yet, that didn’t make the decision any less impactful. The retro floral print on the shoes was also translated through the collection, merging well with other retro patterns on dresses, tops, and outerwear. Some pieces were even created in the classic vintage velvet fabric, which also carried levels of nostalgia and sentiment for Taylor.

“My mum used to make me these little printed velvet suits when I was growing up,” Taylor told Vogue. “I have such a history with women in my life making beautiful clothes. I think that really translates here.” And I would absolutely have to agree. Having such a rich background in fashion and printmaking can do wonders for the career of a designer, as seen here, and that will only continue to strengthen as time goes on. Taylor had a great basis for a career in design, and it has so far cultivated to this beautiful display full of memories and respect for the fabulous women in her life that have inspired her.

Through retro florals, timeless pieces, and a head-to-toe polished look, there’s not much more that could have been done to make her great aunt proud. The pieces in the Rebecca Taylor fall 2016 collection individually are perfectly ready-to-wear, and will look great during the cold months. The outerwear will likely do especially well once the collection goes live in stores, as the range goes from polished, tailored pieces, to warm furs. Nostalgia is a powerful thing in the fashion industry, both as a selling point and from the buyers’ perspective, so sometimes there’s nowhere else to go but retro.
