“You have to feel comfortable in your designs and know what works for you. There’s always going to be trends, and there’s always going to be fly-by-the-minute each season, but they don’t work for everyone. So you have to dissect and really know who you are and what works for you. There should always be a sense of who you are”, says Richard Chai, an American fashion designer, who has previously collaborated with such people as Cristiano Ronaldo (he has designed underwear and socks for the footballer), Lanvin, Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs himself! And the newest Richard Chai spring/summer 2015 collection has proved that Chai is a man to stay true to his words. The new collection is very unique and “Chai-like”. Designed for young people, it’s warm like spring and bright like summer.
We all know that Richard Chai is no designer to avoid bright colors. When it comes to choosing colors, he’s never afraid to experiment and go for the bold ones. The Richard Chai spring/summer 2015 collection he presented to our attention within the framework of this year’s New York Fashion Week turned out to be a fascinating parade of bright colors: neon yellow as a prevailing color shade, dark shimmery blue, green and maroon.
The outfits in general were pretty chic and stylish, with a hint of tomboyishness in them. The models were presented as inhabitants of a populous American metropolis and strolled down the catwalk in the most urban clothes: disproportionate mini dresses combined with wide-sleeved mantles, shimmery shorts with sleeveless satin tops with belts, blue and green dresses combined with pale purple coats (that’s the thing about Richard Chai: he can manage to combine the most “uncombinable” of colors and they will still look perfect!), jumpsuits with semi-transparent tops, striped maroon jackets with matching shorts, transparent shimmery dresses worn over dark pants, strapped dresses with the most diverse of patterns and so on. The shoes worn by the models seemed like must-haves for living in a big city: high platform and wide sandals made of leather, which seemed so comfy to us!
Unlike Chai’s previous fashion shows (you remember bright red lips and orange eye makeup, don’t you?), in this year’s fashion show there was nothing sophisticated or extraordinary about the makeup and hairstyles of the models: minimal makeup and hair simply hanging lose. Some models were sporting the famous bright red lip, but that was pretty much it.
We loved the Richard Chai spring/summer 2015 collection and we really hope and believe that Chai will stay true to his words and will never let go of the individuality and uniqueness the clothes he designs possess. After all, it’s one of the reasons we love him, isn’t it?
