Sonia by Sonia Rykiel has released yet another eccentric collection, continuing on the theme of drawing inspiration from the world’s lesser known celebrities. The Bloom Twins are an English duo, with its members originating from Ukraine. Sisters Anna and Sonia Kuprienko make up the duo, and perform their variation of “dark pop” music. This is where Sonia’s design team looked for inspiration for the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel pre-fall 2016 collection. Using direct communication and some collaboration, a collection was created as something the sisters themselves would find in their own wardrobes.
Sonia’s clothes are usually known for their distinct feminine charm, but for the next season, the design team took an alternative route. Since the collection was also based on the Bloom Twins, the clothes were edgier than normal, but of course the brand didn’t lose its girly roots! The femininity came out mostly with choices in silhouettes and fabrics, but was embedded within the collection, so as not to show a leaning away from their chosen inspiration.
The clothes were created for a young, urban woman. Sometimes it may have skirted the line into becoming a bit too juvenile, but overall there was a lot to love about the collection. And even the less mature looks have their place in the world; younger teenagers can fit right into these clothes.
As a pre-fall collection, this line did just what it needed to do. The clothes here may not be the next huge trends, but it shows the brand is reaching out of its niche and trying out new things in the market. This is a great way for brands to expand their market and reach, and pre-season collections are the ideal time to show test the waters. There’s not quite as much pressure put on the designers, but it is still important to have a unique and interesting showing for their customers. This trial collection here may just bring in some new customers for the brand.
Lace-up top lace dresses showed the balance between femininity and urban edge, in a sort of quirky way. The concept overall is the quirky part, a lace lace-up dress is not only fun to say, but also gives a soft lace silhouette contrasted with a hard black lace-up top. This showed that the brand was trying its hand at marrying the two styles together in the new collection, and set up a precedent for what the rest of the collection would hold.
Tights were another interesting aspect of the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel pre-fall 2016 collection, since they seemed to play to both of the styles portrayed in the line-up. They came mostly in black lace and were featured in most of the looks in the collection. Many of the black tights gave some more edge to looks, while a lone pair of purple added a simple elegance.
Aside from the specific elements, the Sonia by Sonia Rykiel pre-fall 2016 collection showed a plethora of outerwear like bomber jackets, trench coats, capes, and varying weights of jackets for the temperamental fall weather. We were also able to see Sonia’s design team’s take on slouchy casualwear, which proved to be an interesting feat. Horizontal striped sweater dresses and simple graphic tees paved the way for this collection, and have gained Sonia a rung of innovation and forward-thinking. If the brand continues its pattern of inspiration sources, we can’t even guess what will be in store next.
