Tadashi Shoji’s Resort 2017 Collection Cites Art

When he first started out his career as an artist, fashion designer Tadashi Shoji focused all of his creative ideas on painting, only launching his eponymous label in the Eighties. Now that he has been working in the fashion industry for more than 30 years, the American-Japanese designer sort of went back to his roots with his latest Tadashi Shoji resort 2017 collection, which draws inspiration from French impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard.

French impressionist painter Bonnard was an active member of the Symbolist group of painters known as Les Nabis, whose signature style was ditching a three-dimensional kind of model in favor of flatter, more colorful patterns. Although being a Symbolist, Bonnard did not comply with his peers’ mystic symbolist way of conceiving art, and only followed their colorful and fascinating aesthetics. He delighted us with scenes of the simple, intimate daily life he found around him, and with balanced color combinations he chose so meticulously.

Like Pierre Bonnard, Tadashi also carefully selected all of the Tadashi Shoji resort 2017 collection’s pastel colors, putting a clear forethought not only in the color-blocking combinations, but also in the fabrics he chose to decorate such colored patterns with. Even the intricate geometric-cut pieces exude lightness, adding an overall sense of fluidity that makes everything even more fairytale-like and totally from another world.

Although being undeniably elegant and sophisticated, all of the proposals come infused with a playful vibe that captivatingly add an overall fresh attitude to the entire collection, making it specifically suitable for the fashion designer’s younger audience.

Depending on the accessories, most of the looks could in fact be regarded as either red carpet material or just informal event-suitable proposals, which could be brightened up with a more casual pair of shoes. This resort collection is probably one of Shoji’s most wearable and versatile lines ever, not to mention the care he put into giving his own version of some of the pre-spring 2017 hottest trends.

From off-the-shoulder necklines to plunging slits, from asymmetrical cuts to unexpected cut-outs and lace embroideries, the collection has it all indeed, and urges you to wear those trends all at once. There are even a few crochet details that, along with the pastel colors, give a modern art deco-meets-modernity appeal to basically any look.

Lastly, it is very interesting to point out Tadashi Shoji’s willingness to explore the trends his younger audience enjoys wearing today, since, as it’s observed the fashion industry is currently in the hands of the so-called millennials. Likewise, Jeremy Scott’s Moschino resort 2017 collection veered to appeal to such a younger audience, both with its ultra-colorful designs and the vibrant runway show.
