Fans of the exceptional Ulyana Sergeenko are in for a fabulous Christmas present this year. The Russian designer has released a limited edition collection for the holidays, which seems to celebrate the joy and frivolity of the season. But the looks in the Ulyana Sergeenko holiday 2015 capsule collection also manage to get right down to business, as the silhouettes feature the air of professional regality we have grown to expect among the designer’s whimsical lines. And, of course, you can expect the same note of grandeur that comes with Sergeenko’s couture lines.
This contrast between fun and regal occurs at the drop of a hat. There doesn’t appear to be a particular rhythm to how many dresses would be about business and how many about fun, but instead they run side by side, seeming to have been created as spontaneously as they appear to.
For instance, a floor-length dress with three-quarter sleeves and a modest neckline is decked out in a festive print featuring decorations found on a Christmas tree. The silhouette could have easily fit with the designer’s classic aesthetic with a different print, but this choice just serves to celebrate Christmas – what better way to promote good cheer for the holidays than wearing a gorgeous gown dressed the same way a tree would be? Just by explaining the concept could easily make the dress seem tacky, but the execution is where Sergeenko proves her skill as a couture designer. Despite the print, the dress still manages to look chic and sophisticated – a point, which could have easily been passed.
On the other end of the spectrum, the designer also included totally formal garments, perfect for a holiday evening party. A sweetheart almost-bustier topped asymmetrical floral evening gown sounds like a very busy dress, but is really a sophisticated, sexy dress that hints back to old-fashioned chicness. With the styling incorporated in the photoshoot, the model looks like she could attend a gala from any era and be the most stunning woman present.
Such is the work of a couturier. The looks are created to be individualized, in that ten women could wear the same garment for ten different ways, and still portray ten different personas. A festive dress doesn’t have to mean sophistication all the time. In fact, it seems Sergeenko here is playing around with both sides of the coin. She is maintaining her design aesthetic while still showing off a side not as commonly seen, thus making the Holiday season the perfect time for this reveal. The Ulyana Sergeenko holiday 2015 capsule collection is a bit of a gift to her fans, and it is definitely one that is welcomed with open arms.
