Pierpaolo Piccioli showed Valentino’s unconventional but at the same time mesmerizing Resort 2018 collection on May 24. Unlike the other luxury brands that took their Resort Collections to grandeur places (Dior at the Open Space Preserve at Calabasas, Louis Vuitton at a museum in Kyoto), Pierpaolo chose a downtown loft in New York. Considering that the whole collection is based on the street style of the Big Apple, the wonderful loft was a perfect match for his creations.
For Mr. Piccioli this was the first solo cruise collection for Valentino since his former partner Maria Grazia Chiuri left the fashion house. The designer got addicted to “The Get Down” show on Netflix and got inspired by the streets and hip-hop. The athleisure style is making a big comeback on the fashion scene, and Valentino is just one more haute couture brand that brought it on the runway.
The colorful collection offered a very laid-back style, with many prominent colors. The erupting red, pastel pink, and baby pink gave the whole collection a very contemporary note. Valentino showed a line rich with dresses in many styles and colors. There were dresses with prints and embroidery, perfect for casual occasions. Others were elegant, pleated or made of lace. The tracksuits and the varsity jackets were on the sportier side. Valentino’s most popular dresses from this collection are going to be the simple, loose gowns made of intense pink velvet.
The wide range of jackets varied from oversized bombers to classic trench coats and loose blazers. All the looks were perfectly accessorized with earrings and small handbags in different colors.
The models walked the runway wearing furry flip-flops, flat slides, and interesting sneakers and boots. The outfit that drew a lot of attention was a combination of heeled sandals with white athletic socks in the spirit of the hip-hop style. And because denim is life, Pierpaolo included a pair of wide jeans, made of dark denim. Piccioli for sure made a very bold choice with the designs of this collection, but at the end, it turned into a great success.
Pierpaolo once again teamed up with the prominent British designer Zandra Rhodes, who created many prints for the dresses and jackets. This is one more legendary collaboration that will definitely be remembered. Among the celebrities that followed the show from the first rows were Christina Ricci, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Helena Christensen and Marisa Tomei.
