Valentino creative directors Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri seem to be shooting for the stars, ringing in the new spring/summer season with a wonderful plan to make us all Wonder Women. Inspired by the fictional character of the Wonder Woman by DC Comics, the Italian fashion house is launching the Wonder Woman Valentino capsule collection all spangled with stars to purportedly bring some stars in our eyes.
When the American psychologist William Moulton Marston dreamt up a new Wonder Woman superhero as the warrior princess of the Amazons back in 1941, the main idea was to show the world that when physical power comes to mingle with tender feminine love, that’s something unrivalled and beyond comparison. And now after all these years haven’t we reached that superhero Wonder Woman category? The answer to the question is just another question: “What else to call the contemporary woman if not a Wonder Woman when she pulls off so triumphantly to rock in the business world, bring up children, be romantically involved in a relationship and thereunto, look drop-dead gorgeous?”
Just in time when the modern woman is best synced up with the fictional character and just a year earlier before the release of the American superhero film Wonder Woman, we have a unique opportunity to stack wardrobe shelves with as starry pieces as is required to strengthen feminine positions in the world. But do not think to find here any body-hugging corsets, bustiers, or knee-high boots. Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri have just borrowed those magic stars, scattered them on tulle, leather or denim and got a range of garment pieces and pretty accessories.
Ranging from denim short and bomber jackets to tulle maxi and mini dresses in nude to even a camo jacket and a fur cropped one, all is wrapped with stars in the Wonder Woman Valentino capsule collection. But stars do not end in here appearing also on sneakers, pointy-toed high-heeled and flat shoes, top-handled bags and clutches, at times coming to be mixed with turquoise stones. There is even a lovely tiara in the collection to pay tribute to that projectile tiara on Wonder Woman’s head all the while.
And just to enhance the superhero mood in the air and to make it more vivid, the creative directors have invited the Italian street artist Solo who has a range of superhero illustration experiences under his belt, to paint Wonder Woman murals at the brand’s flagship stores in Rome, Milan and New York, each one infused with that specific region’s qualities and hallmarks. With Rome and Milan illustrations already completed, the flagship store of the Fifth Avenue of New York City is to see its unique Wonder Woman look completed on April 22d. And chances are that the USA Wonder Woman would prefer attire depicting thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white and a blue rectangle in the corner rife with fifty small stars. American flag fashion is back, maybe!
