Vivienne Westwood‘s name is known to everybody, who is more or less familiar with fashion. Westwood is the designer, who can proudly claim to be the creator of punk style in fashion; her collections are eccentric, she loves to mix the classic English style with elements of punk, creating awe-inspiring, eye-catching and gorgeously extravagant pieces. Collections by Westwood always take us into another dimension, some people even say that the clothes by Vivienne are some sort of conduit between the real world and the underworld.
Being familiars with the British brand’s iconic style, we knew to some extent what to expect from the Vivienne Westwood spring/summer 2015 collection, yet Mrs. Westwood managed to surprise us. As a collection it was somewhat moody, mysterious, we can even ascribe the word “haunted” to it. The pieces were colorful, patterned and layered, twisted and tied. Westwood had used lots of shimmery and silky materials to create extravagant dresses, the most distinctive feature of which was their volume.
The dark and serious mood of the collection was set right after the first models appeared on the runway. Westwood had used a gray silky fabric to create a high collared long dress with puffy and ruffled sleeves and adding to it a matching unique cap-like hat gave the whole image some “Darth Vadery” touch. Even when dresses seemed rather casually and simply designed, the dramatic makeup and hairstyle of the models were always there to make up for the missing mysteriousness.
The pants presented at the show were mostly high waisted and straight, with interesting waistlines to add a unique edge to them. The dresses were mostly knee length or shorter, complemented with belts and patches of fabric here or there. Mrs. Westwood was also happy to show some skin by designing printed bathing suits, which she complemented with cape like long “coats”, and a skin colored bikini top and a bottom.
The Vivienne Westwood spring/summer 2015 collection was probably one of the most abundantly accessorized collections that we have ever seen. Headwear was the most diverse and interesting: first we saw those triangular shaped hats and berets that looked as if taken from a fairytale. Then we were presented to some of the most extraordinary hats we had ever seen. The new hats designed by Mrs. Westwood resembled…woven baskets worn upside down! The hat-baskets were decorated with massive bow ties, colorful satin ribbons and leaf cutouts. With dresses and skirts Westwood models were wearing knee length socks in black and white: another way to add to the extravagance of the collection.
The makeup of the models could not be missed either: rose cheeks, smudged red lips, eyes heavily clad in colorful mascara. As for the hairstyles, Westwood hairstylists had gone for curly hair. Extravagant clothes need extravagant shoes to match, that is why Westwood shoes were no less extraordinary than the dresses themselves. We had open toe platform heels, strappy pumps as well as closed flats.
The Vivienne Westwood spring/summer 2015 collection was everything we expected and even more! It was something true Vivienne Westwood fans have always appreciated: baffling, bizarre and absolutely cool.
