Brian Wolk and Claude Morais are the designers behind the brand Wolk Morais. The brand debuted its 5th runway collection on May 22 in Los Angeles. The presentation took place at the renowned Hollywood restaurant Yamashiro. The presentation had a special meaning for the designers and represented an ode to the city of angels — or, as the creative duo likes to call it, “the promise land”.
Morais shared a couple words about the inspiration for the collection: “It’s in the air. We like to take neighborhoods and explore. Last year we were exploring Fairfax, this year we took it to Melrose. L.A. is such a diverse city of places.”
“We live near Melrose and we walk there on the weekends,” added his fellow designer Wolk. “It’s always cool to see what the kids are wearing and what they’re adapting from the ’80s, ’90s and the ’00s. What’s fresh for them is fresh for us. We live through their experiencing these decades for the first time.”
Their latest creations from the 2017 Ready-to-wear Collection were inspired directly from the gender-bending fashion from the ’40s. As the designers stated the main inspiration was Melrose Avenue, its people, and their lifestyle. The LA-based designers presented the collection assisted by the famous celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart. Among her famous clientele are Cate Blanchett, Frieda Pinto, and Julia Roberts. Elizabeth created a great combination of the undone suiting and soft tailoring with gold tank tops and gold suspenders. The collection has 29 pieces, all of them unique and eye-catchy.
The collection was dominated by double-breasted suits with sharp, strong shoulders that resembled ’40s Hollywood fashion. Trousers were predominantly wide and high-waisted with chain details on both sides.
Brian Wolk and Claude Morais designed heavily dramatic gowns with exaggerated details on the hemlines and the edges of the sleeves such as feathers. The designers used sheer fabrics to create the gowns. The sheer trend is very popular lately, but you won’t see much skin in their designs. The creative duo used sheer fabrics but their dresses covered every inch of the women’s body. An interesting moment is that they paired the gowns with tights in the matching color.
In fact, colored tights were present in almost every outfit. Another great surprise were the printed floral tights that added life to many one-tone combinations. Tights were paired with metallic vintage gold platform sandals. All things considered, the entire collection was definitely all about the 40’s intense Hollywood glamor.
The designers played with tones of burgundy, intense red, blue, tangerine, mauve and other colors. Speaking of color, the collection has something for everybody. There are electric one-tone looks as well as designs rich in prints and eye-catchy patterns.
The duo included mesmerizing floral prints on both men’s and women’s designs. Sequins are part of Hollywood and the duo didn’t miss the chance to add them on one of their designs – a jumpsuit that featured a dazzling sequin top and extremely wide-leg trousers.
The designers featured a lot of denim pieces in the collection. The team behind Wolk Morais included dark denim in all forms. A double-breasted oversized suit with high-waisted ankle pants decorated with chains, a pair of wide trousers, denim coat and an extremely oversized denim jumpsuit were spotted on the runway.
It’s very hard to describe the collection with only a couple words because there is a contrast everywhere. Only the tailoring was almost the same for both men and women.
Among the A-listers who attended the show were Natalie Joos, Isabelle Fuhrman, Victoria Summer, Natasha Bassett, Joanne Froggatt, Skylar Grey, Skai Jackson, Chandler Kinney, George Kotsiopoulos, Perrey Reeves, Ava Sambora, Joe Zee and Ryan Rottman.
The designers also teamed up with Teen Cancer America on a cloisonné awareness pin. Models wore the pin on the runway and the pin will be available for purchase on the Teen Cancer America’s website.
After the show, the designers had prepared an entertaining party. On the fine menu, there was endless sushi, a lot of drinks to stimulate the guests and a playlist curated by the established magazine editor George Kotsiopoulos.
