Rachel Roy dipped her toes in the water when she collaborated with Melissa Obadash for a swimwear collection this past summer. And now she’s ready to dive right in, by launching two full swimwear collections for the coming year. The pieces in the Rachel Roy swimwear lines center around the idea of year-round swimsuit needs, especially in the life of a big city socialite.
“Moving back to the West Coast after 20 years in New York, I’ve found myself needing year-round swimsuits and wanting to create collections that reflect me,” Roy said in an interview with WWD. The designer continued on to say that the beach is the place where she feels the biggest sense of peace, especially when her daughters, Ava and Tallulah, are there.
So, the debut Rachel Roy swimwear collections are made up of pieces Roy would love to wear herself. It’s always easy to design a collection when you’re a member of the target consumer, so fans will be overjoyed to wear these looks knowing they were made by and for the designer.
Both of the lines will launch under Roy’s eponymous labels, and will contain both one-pieces and separates; the latter will be made to mix-and-match, so there’s great room for customization and playing around with color combinations.
One collection will launch under Roy’s signature namesake label. For this Rachel Roy swimwear line, the designer brought us back to the Nineties while also bringing in her own modern twists. She looked to supermodels of that time and came up with interesting cutouts and bold colors in luxe Italian fabrics.
Her other label, Rachel Rachel Roy, will host the other collection. As a lower priced label, these looks are the more youthful of the two, playing around with florals and watercolors, as well as stud embellishments and transparent mesh.
By having both of her lines feature their own separate lines, Roy is encompassing a larger spectrum of women; this is vital to Roy’s success as a designer, because there are so many different types of personalities to satisfy, especially when it comes to swimwear.
“Some women are more active at the beach than others, so we wanted to make sure that women were going to feel comfortable and supported in the constructions of the suits, but still feel sexy,” said the designer.
The Rachel Roy swimsuit collections will be launching next year; the Rachel Roy line will retail for $76 to $185, while the Rachel Rachel Roy line, to be sold at rachelroy.com and Macy’s locations, will come in at a lower price point between $48 and $98.
The designer has also recently launched a few different collections, including an athleisure line in a beautiful graffiti print, a leather accessory line made to be monogrammed, and a collection featuring costume jewelry and body chains. According to Roy, she has been carefully weighing her options when expanding into different fashion categories, such as her new swimwear venture.
“’Why? Why does she need this? Do we have a truly authentic point of view and something different to offer?’” Roy rhetorically inquired, during her interview. “My goal is to always create something that is going to add value to her life and to be a business that adds value to my community. Both of my [swimwear] collections are styles that I trust – as a 42-year-old woman – to make me look both protected yet sexy. And my 16-year-old-daughter helped to shape the Rachel Rachel Roy collection with a youthful voice.”
Roy clearly has everything she needs to create lines for mature, sophisticated women, as well as for young women with a bit more flair. We love her expansion into swimwear, and we love that we know we can look forward to more innovation and expansions in the future. With her Rachel Rachel Roy collection, for instance, the designer will be launching curvy sizing as well, to reach a greater base of women.
