Spring/ Summer 2016 Eyewear Trends

We have been looking at all the top spring/ summer 2016 fashion trends for a while now. We have covered everything from the 2016 colors to the patterns, the shapes and general styles to the spring 2016 handbags, the shoes, the hairstyles and makeup. We have done the nails as well and now we are looking at the spring/ summer 2016 sunglasses trends, a necessary accessory for any woman while the sun beats down on her during the spring and summer seasons especially. The greatest trends can be found all over the runways, taking over the ensembles in some cases. The sunglasses often make the outfit and that is exactly what we see here, despite the fact that a bare face is often more lovingly embraced. The most commonly stated line for the spring seasons is that the glasses will be going big or just heading on home.

Spring/ Summer 2016 Eyewear Trends

The Fashion Week shows from New York to London, Milan to Paris featured a theme of eclecticism where designers really played with prints and textures and savory flourishes such as that of lace, embroidery, crystal details and lots of sequins. Glitters and sparkle really took flight. The opulence noticed was also to be found on the innovative spring/ summer 2016 eyewear trends that often took us to the future and back. We notice everything from the true to form wayfarers and aviators but also some rather odd and flashy versions of those accessories we so love to boast.

Update: also check out the new Fall/ Winter 2016-2017 Eyewear Trends

The year and the spring/ summer seasons seem to really bring the focus onto new forms of art, which means the minimalism of the makeup can easily be countered and balanced with the maximalism of what you wear on your face, from the jewelry to the eyewear. Style will be the main reason you wear them, as opposed to sun protection, and the sheer size of some of the glasses might throw you for a loop.

Glamorous as they are, the summer 2016 sunglasses are certainly wearable and will be further accentuating the theme of individualism. The extravagance aside, we really need to turn our attention to the fabulous art and the positively perfect product designs while transcend beyond mere fashion and functionality. The details and the overall aesthetic make this part of the outfits generate the most effectively stylish part of all the different trends we may talk about.

The top 2016 eyewear trends noticed on the runway include:

#1: Oversized Sunglasses Are a Must

This is the theme that you should take care to follow best. While you might like tiny glasses, it is the oversized that rules the runway for the spring and summer seasons of 2016 and we expect it will continue on into the fall and winter as well.

We see round frames with floral embellishments at Dolce & Gabbana, along with candy striped butterfly frames, square frames with golden glitters at Gucci, gorgeous aviators at Chanel with the engraved looks, and those round Escada pieces with the double wires. We see oversized squares at Cg, rounds at Custo Barcelona, combinations of round and cat at Marni and D lenses at Felder Felder, the likes of Boss, Bibhu Mohapatra and Banana Republic not too far behind.

#2: Cat Eye Sunnies Still Rule Supreme

Surprising as it may seem, while the cat eyes do reign supreme and seem to appear all over the place, they are not as big as we had expected previously. On the contrary, the cat and round combination is what many are rooting for now, combining two of their most revered styles into a single look. The cat alone can be seen though, appearing at Eudon Choi, as well as on the infamous Moschino runway show featuring humans in traffic colors and signage.

At Anna Sui, it is all about the floral details, particularly when they appear on a forest green frame encompassing gentle amethyst lenses. Of course, things can take a distinctly yellowish color as well, springing to life with the beauty of the spring and all its glory at Dries Van Noten with a cat eyed yellow-lensed bottomless rimmed pair of glasses.

#3: Intriguing Geometric Sunglasses

If you prefer the rectangular look over than of the round or cat eye, you are in luck! Everything you may want can be seen on the runways, including some gorgeous futuristic Marco de Vincenzo pieces that are right out of the matrix, while at Costume National the geometric shape takes an interesting roundish form.

It goes hand in hand with the whole IT boom happening around the world. At Marni, it is all about the geometric combinations as the common theme of round meets cat eye switches to square in pentagon designs in brown and other earthy colors.

#4: Aviators Still Dominate the Style

Gorgeous aviator sunglasses can be seen all around, from the futuristic but gorgeous Chanel pieces with the multiple hues and the engraves frameless designs to the crescendo effects on the Acne glasses that have a rather shooting star look to it, double tailed and all. Furthermore, Stella McCartney makes sure to pack a pretty punch with the red and green framed reflective glasses that cover up half the face with their oversized appeal, the dark lenses only adding to the funky results we are faced with. With House of Holland, the red turns to yellow though, the frame picks up some mesh and the wire rims appear to hold those sunshine yellow lenses in place.

#5: Titillating Detailing All Over

Details, details, and details… There are all types and forms and designs in terms of details, from the barely there to the over the top embellishments. The former can be visualized through the Chanel glasses that come in different hues but all seem to share a similar engraved design that has a rather futuristic effect to it. Titillating details you want? Check out the round-lensed beauties we see at Opening Ceremony with the waving lace details across the top, along the brow-line. We notice lovely details appear at Dolce & Gabbana with their buggy appeal, even more insect related as the floral embellishments appear on all sides.

#6: Irregular Shapes to the Lenses

Colors differ from lens to lens obviously, but having uniquely shaped versions of them is rather unexpected and thoroughly lovable, especially the red double wire rimmed amethyst hued blob-like lenses, where it seems that the edges of a formerly perfectly circular piece has been melted at Kenzo.

Animal shapes keep popping up all around, as they did on the shoes and the handbags. Now we notice their silhouettes on the summer 2016 sunglasses as well, including the red and white striped Dolce & Gabbana pieces with the dark lenses. Stars can also be seen on the lenses, the frames taking on the colorful forms at Giamba, where gorgeousness means star-shaped glasses.

#7: Square that is Not Really Square Shield Sunglasses

Rounded glasses are great and all, but it is the square that appeals to so many of us out there and that is exactly what Felder Felder has vowed to give us, only with its own flair. This is a look we notice also at Ralph Lauren, the double wire rims and darkest of dark lenses really giving the style an interesting appeal. It is a gorgeous trend, especially when you add candy apple red to a similarly colored frame, the eyes clearly visible behind the coloring, as seen at Emilio Pucci.

#8: Cat and Round Combinations Peek Through

You love the cat eye because it adds to the sexiness of an outfit. You love the round frames because of the hipster effect. You want them both in one, and the spring/ summer 2016 eyewear trends bring such a stylish combination. Fendi has heard your cry for the best of both worlds and gives it to us in a 3D, bug-eyed, cat and round mixture that is sure to leave one demanding more. Add the top color of the year, the aqua blues, and you certainly cannot go wrong.

Marni also shows immense love for this particular style, opting to bring in colorful cat eye tops to dark and round lenses, the colors ranging from reds to blues to pinks and browns.

#9: Dark Lenses Are a Favorite

Lenses can come in many different colors but it appears that the dark is holding tight to the top slot, with good reason. It is the best to protect against the fierce glare of the sun in general, making designer pieces such as the grey rimmed techy looking futuristic lenses at Marco di Vincenzo, the round and cat eye combinations with aqua detailing at Fendi, and the red and white stripes on the frames of butterfly shapes sunglasses made to match with the outfits at Dolce & Gabbana look positively delectable.

We see futuristic sunglasses for 2016 with crescendo wayfarers at Acne, cat eyed beauties at Isa Arfen, and lovely aviators at Chanel. Dark lenses in a red and black color combine at Marni, the frames and interesting detailing taking over at Opening Ceremony, and it is all about the black lens with the colorful frames in a cat eye fashion as per the Moschino spring/summer 2016 show. The dark lenses are in and we are loving every aspect of it.

#10: Clarity is Also Important

Some spring/ summer 2016 sunglasses spotted on the runways certainly do not appear to be made for the sun as they come with perfectly clear lenses set against some rather spectacular frames, one that Gucci has painted gold and decided to give a shimmer to. Clear lenses in slightly peach tinted lenses and a copper double wire frame found at Paul & Joe are definitely one to enjoy as well, wayfarer designs and all. On the other hand, it is blue lining in clear plastic that creates the Emilio Pucci wayfarer glasses, oversized and still positively magnificent in its appeal.

#11: Reflective Lenses

One interesting trend seen on the runways is the reflective lenses version where those protective pieces worn seem to be almost like a mirror. It appears at Akris in the shape of Neo sunglasses, a blast from the past bringing us to the days of the Matrix movies in theatres. Back then, everyone wanted to have a Neo look.

We notice the reflective effect at Chanel, where the removal of the glasses puts us face to face with shadow covered eyes, brows and the bridge of the nose, almost appearing as if the glasses left a blue shadow in some cases.

#12: Sunglasses with Yellowish Lenses

Some lenses appear dark, others light and then there is the yellow in between. We find the Dolce & Gabbana glasses with the round frames and the awesome floral embellishment detailing to be a must, particularly with the round lenses in a yellowish hue.

Yellowish ombre lenses appear on the Roberto Cavalli runway show as well, with rimless designs and an oversized look covering up half the face of the model wearing it. Yellow lenses are added to yellow frames at Dries Van Noten for a distinctly immaculate cool-girl look. It is the sunshine itself that is taken and turned into the House of Holland glasses, complete with silver wire rims and a mesh effect, where it would have been a double trend.

#13: Sunnies with Colorful Lenses

A few designers have opted to change the traditional colors of the lenses to something a lot more on the colorful side. While those like Marni have kept things relatively dark, despite the use of reds instead of the black, others like at Chanel we notice fire hues and gorgeous amethyst purples. Duro Olowu turns the dark purple shades on with a gorgeous cat eye, while Carolina Herrera opts for a reflective light blue hue.

There is just something about a colorful lens that grabs the attention and leaves you looking sexier than ever. Talking about sexy, it looks like we have some gamer girls at Emilio Pucci, what with the candy apple red glasses where lens and frame share the same hue.

Amethyst is a common color though it appears as Kenzo makes it onto stage with some tantalizingly unstructured double wire rimmed glasses, also making an appearance at Anna Sui within green frames on the cat eye look we cannot help but love. Colorful lenses appear at Nicholas K, Costume National, Oscar de la Renta and many others.

#14: Blue Keeps Appearing Everywhere

Blue rimmed sunglasses with dark lenses and a round and cat eye look combination seen at Fendi are only one of the designs that incorporate the top color of the spring and summer, the aqua blue, into their designs. Surprisingly, though, purple is a more common hue in terms of lenses at least than blue is for the spring.

Blue appears in the diver colored aviators seen at Chanel, looking positively fabulous, while the sky blue comes into effect on the round with cat eye combination Marni sunglasses. Funky cat eye aqua framed glasses also make an appearance at Moschino and we can tell that just wearing those will give us a dose of much needed fun during our days. It is the embodiment of spring there.

Large wayfarer glasses with blue plastic rims come out to play at Emilio Pucci, matching beautifully with the eyes underneath as seen through clear lenses and only amplified in beauty due to the fact that the model wearing the new designs has been shorn pretty short. Louis Vuitton, on the other hand, brings in the alien eyes in a teal coloring, the lenses and frames sharing the same overall shade.

Spring/ Summer 2016 Eyewear Trends: Blue Sunglasses

#15: Gold & Glitter on the Frames

Gold has been appearing within the metallic versions of each trend, so we expected its appearance on the spring/ summer 2016 eyewear trends department as well. Shimmering gold on oversized clear-lensed askew square frames can be spotted at Gucci, while Dolce & Gabbana ensures we get a rather royal treatment happening, the bejeweled frames only adding to the golden appeal of the trend. The enamel daisies, miniature cherubs and overabundance of jewels make for the more prominent of spring/ summer 2016 sunglasses seen on the Fashion Week runway shows yet, an intentional dose of kitsch having been added to the tourism-themed show.

Golden frames in a clear plastic come up at Cg with square lenses, while it is golden wire rims at Marni we are looking at, particularly on the round with cat eye combinations in different colors; these include pink, light blue and earth red. We love glittery style quite a bit actually, particularly the silvery versions available from the Cushnie et Ochs collection, D-shapes, dark lenses and all. It looks especially good with tanned skin, hair pulled back and vampy dark lipstick to boot.

#16: Colorful Frames for Some Fun

The most fun a girl can have in eyewear often revolves around the colors that she decides to don on. While the lenses themselves can be colorful, as mentioned, there are a great many hues the frames themselves can take on, including the aqua and buttercup yellows noticed at Moschino, worn by human pylons in bright colors.

And then, of course, there are the Stella McCartney aviators that look more like red and green colored game consoles framing the eyes on the catwalk, giving us the impression that aliens have invaded earth. It most definitely adds to the fun of it, while it comes into play with more neutral colors as well.

Anna Sui loves to add in some beauty with the frames as well, painting floral patterns across the cat eye. The cat eye also appears at Dries Van Noten with the yellow lenses on the yellow frames, looking positively retro while still rather futuristic with the white rims right at the edges of the lenses, an ideal that is repeated at the Holly Fulton show through those pink framed triangular glasses, pink ombre lenses and all.

Blue might be gorgeous and common, but in terms of the summer 2016 sunglasses, the different shades of purple seem to appear more often. From the blob-like amethyst lenses at Kenzo with the double wire rims in red to the light purple thicker frames spotted at Carven, purple sunglasses were spotted a lot on the runway and so will on the streets soon. It is futuristic aviators that we see at Costume National where the purple lenses amplify the sex appeal of the double striped look that is neither too large nor too small.

The world is evolving into a technology-oriented society that will soon have the most effective creations seen throughout history yet. This means that the summer 2016 sunglasses, along with all the different trend-setting styles, are required to follow suit with the developments, beginning to look as tech-friendly as possible. This includes gorgeous black lensed, grey-rimmed Marco de Vincenzo pieces.

The tech look comes off as something pretty sexy when you add bright red lipstick onto the face that sports the purple ombre cat eyed and grey-framed glasses as per the Jason Wu runway show.

#17: Double Wire Rims

If you love the larger lenses but prefer not to have the frames, the better form of support definitely comes from the double wire rims, which also look really great with the smaller designs, though the cat eyes at Eudon Choi are not near as lovely as the gorgeous round lensed Escada versions that are both oversized and with a slightly reflective lens. We also see the double wire rims appearing with a bit more support and a very futuristic feel at Carolina Herrera, light blue reflective lenses and all, the rims themselves coming in dual tones of black and white.

Even at Devon Halfnight LeFlufy, the rectangular glasses with the black lenses sport the same rim trend, looking quite awesome on a heart shaped little face. Double wire rims in red appear at Kenzo on amethyst lenses sporting an unconventional shape to it alongside others as well. Even at Paul & Joe, the clear peach colored glasses come in the double wire rim.

#18: Edgy Futuristic Sunglasses

If you like things edgy and futuristic, you are in luck, as the spring/ summer 2016 eyewear trends bring some cool, modern pieces we dream to own! While the oversized and the round might be the ruling partners, with heavy embellishments and interesting artistry, we also see the cleaner lines of a futuristic tech world, complete with grey frames in 3D designs and black lenses at Marco de Vincenzo.

At Acne, the sunglasses take on a new effect, with a Crescendo design that splits into double tails on a futuristic pair of aviators. Crazy awesome red sunglasses can easily be noticed at the Emilio Pucci show during the Fashion Week, with lens and frame in the same candied color.

Combining edgy and futuristic is also Iceberg, what with the purple ombre lenses and the straight edges all around, making for one of the more unique products to be spotted on the catwalk. As for the alien look, Louis Vuitton has it covered in a lens and frame matching teal coloring found on its Fashion Week runway for the spring season.

It is the gamer girl effect at Nicholas K as well, for truly the black rubber edgings and orange lenses should not exist together otherwise. It is gamer and fisher combined though on the stage of Loewe, where the combination of mosaic, golden fish necklaces and clear earrings with the sounded binocular type glasses is about as futuristic as you can get as far as we know. Then again, silver is what makes things look futuristic these days so Bottega Veneta would have to trump it with the cat eyed black lensed brow detailed silver pair of sunglasses we see on its show.

#19: Ombre Lenses Stay On

While it is certainly not a top trend in the sunglasses department of the fashion industry, ombre lenses are still very much in and look positively terrific. It looks incredible with the purple ombre at Jason Wu, the thick cat eye frame in grey offset by the bright red color on the lips.

The lips are clear when looking at the Iceberg models though, especially when they come on out sporting ski glasses in an ombre yet futuristic design. At Holly Fulton we see the same colors take hold within pink triangular frames, looking chic and sophisticated, while still appearing to be a lady ready for some fun.

#20: Plastic Frames to the Glasses

We do most definitely see wire rims on the different sunglasses for 2016, but it is the clearer plastic that comes in different hues that catches our attentions best. This includes the Emilio Pucci versions with the blue lined frames, the 3D effects on the Marco di Vincenzo futuristic designs, the combination with the wooden frames as seen on the Boss runway, as well as the gorgeous orange Emporio Armani matching lese and frame in an equally gorgeous ensemble. The leopard print plastic frames with the ombre lenses at Etro most certainly convince us that large or small, these frames are top for the spring season.

#21: Rise of the Rimless Glasses

It is not a common theme, but it is a trend nonetheless as we notice the lack of frames on some of those Chanel aviators that cover a blue shadowed face underneath. Who needs frames anyhow? Along with Chanel, Roberto Cavalli agrees that you certainly do not, presenting gorgeous yellowish ombre lenses to match with the golden detailing on the clothing and the flower inspired hoop hearings in an 18-karat yellow gold. You can opt for the much smaller, Neo-inspired pieces spotted at Akris that give you a definite amount of cool and a really out of the box effect.

#22: Matching Sunglasses to Your Clothes

If you like interesting inspirations, look no further than Dolce & Gabbana. Remember when we noticed handbags matching clothing and nails matching makeup? Yes, you guessed correct! We also have sunglasses that match with the outfits worn, from the colors to the patterning, including the red and white stripes we have so clearly noticed at Dolce & Gabbana. It’s an interesting butterfly shape as well! This trend is noticed also at Carolina Herrera where the black double rimmed glasses with the white detailing match beautifully with the black dress with white embroidery across to chest.
