This year’s Pirelli calendar puts celebrities of different backgrounds in the role of movie characters who are chasing big dreams. Four protagonists are part of the unique Pirelli 2019 project: supermodel Gigi Hadid, prima ballerina Misty Copeland, actress Julia Garner and French model/actress Laetitia Casta.
It’s been exactly 45 years since Pirelli first started blessing us with their amazing calendars. For the 2018 edition, the Milanese brand has another surprise. This time they recreated the “Alice in Wonderland’ fairytale casting only black models, actors and activists to wear the costumes.
The stunning photoshoot was done by Tim Walker and was styled by Edward Enninful. Edward is the newly appointed editor of British Vogue, so this was a huge starting point for him. These two with the help of Shona Heath, who designed the set made a unique recreation of Lewis Carroll’s fairytale. The pictures are full of eye-catching costumes done in vivid colors.
Pirelli’s fourth-timer Naomi Campbell and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs lead the stunning array of beautiful faces that star in the calendar. The two portray the role of Royal Beheaders, while supermodel Slick Woods is The Madhatter.
The central role was given to the gorgeous Duckie Thot. Whoopi Goldberg and Thando Hopa teamed up as The Queen of Hearts and The Princess of Hearts. Thando is an albino South African model, activist, and a lawyer.
Among the other familiar faces featured in the calendar is Adwoa Aboah as Tweedledee, Lupita Nyong’o as The Dormouse, and Djimon Hounsou as The King of Hearts. Senegalese model Alpha Dia is The Five-Of-Hearts-Playing-Card Gardener, while his fellow model King Owusu is Two-Of-Hearts-Playing-Card Gardener.
“Pirelli doesn’t discriminate, it’s tyres! It’s Formula One, it can go anywhere it wants to go and it will be a positive message. Even though the [theme] of the calendar is Alice in Wonderland, the message is so big.The timing couldn’t have been better. This week has been an iconic and phenomenal week. The new Vogue launched at the start, and it’s ending with Pirelli. It’s an amazing time, it’s a new time, and I feel that it will remain. I’m so proud of Edward.’- said Naomi Campbell.
All of the stars celebrated the launch of the calendar on Friday evening. They arrived at the Manhattan Center to a psychedelic entrance that imitated the theme. Pirelli is slowly abandoning their concept of featuring models with conventional beauty that are accepted by everyone. In the last few years, they turned the attention to a more diverse cast that represents the reality.
In the past, Pirelli‘s calendars were full of stereotypical beautiful women. Just for the records, the 2015’s calendar featured Adriana Lima and Gigi Hadid covered in latex as well as topless Joan Smalls. A couple years ago they changed their practice. For the 2016 edition, Pirelli finally broke many stereotypes. For the first time ever they hired a woman to photograph the models aside from the husband-and-wife duo Inez and Vinoodh in 2007. Annie Leibovitz was the first woman in 25 years to have photographed for the calendar. She ditched Pirelli’s old practice to cast only attractive women. Instead, Annie cast women who achieved great things throughout their career. She included renewed women from different fields such as comedy, sports, art, and philanthropy. Additionally, the 2017 calendar showed Hollywood actresses without any makeup and retouching.
The tradition of breaking stereotypes continues this year as well. For the 2018 calendar, Pirelli cast all-black models to celebrate inclusivity. The edition is styled by Edward Enninful and lensed by Tim Walker. Edward Enninful is going to be the first ever black editor for British Vogue as well as the first male editor in the 100-year history of Vogue.
The theme of the 2018 Pirelli calendar is Alice in Wonderland. The shot by Tim Walker it’s described as capturing “the surreal world of dreams’. Pirelli gave a complete freedom to the photographer for this project. Tim Walker wanted to tell a completely different story of Alice. To this date, Alice has always been white as well as the rest of the cast.
“There has never been a black Alice, so I wanted to push how fictional fantasy figures can be represented and explore evolving ideas of beauty,’ Tim explained the story behind the idea for the all-black cast.
The cast is truly impressive and includes the model turned feminist Adwoa Aboah, Slick Woods, Lupita Nyong’o, albino lawyer and model Thando Hopa, Whoopi Goldberg, Sasha Lane, Lil Yachty and more. Naomi Campbell who was part of the 1987 all-black Pirelli calendar is in the role of the Royal Beheader while the rapper Puff Daddy is her assistant. The 2018 calendar also includes the transgender drag icon RuPaul as the Queen of Hearts. The Australian model Duckie Thot channels the first ever black Alice.
The 2018 Pirelli calendar is unique and stereotype-breaking in many ways. The pictures tell an old fairy tale in a completely new way. The calendar is about to send a message that beauty shouldn’t be generalized and defined by gender or color.

The Pirelli Calendar for 2017 will follow the long tradition established back in 1963 of being a limited availability calendar that has been in. Everyone knows how exclusivity breeds popularity, but this is not the only attribution to success, especially for a calendar. A huge portion of the success is attributed to the subjects of the calendar, which have to be enchanting enough to garner support and want for the calendar, as it will be how we measure the time of an upcoming year.
Not only are the subjects of the 2017 Pirelli Calendar relevant and sought after, they are beautifully represented in a way that is rarely seen and hopefully indicative of the direction photos will take for the 2017 calendar year.
For the 2017 Pirelli Calendar, the featured faces are those of consummate and well-loved professionals in the purest state possible in a world full of faux images that are heavily edited to create illusions of grandeur. The subjects are un-retouched, giving the photos an intimate and nearly tangibly real quality that has been lacking in the media lately.
The images are the reality people have been craving as they are so unreliably shown to us that our perceptions are extremely skewed. A few of the names included are Lupita Nyong’o, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moor, Uma Thurman and Penelope Cruz. The calendar subjects’ pictures were taken by photographer Peter Lindbergh, who made certain each and every photo addresses something deeper than what we usually see in these women’s photos.
The Pirelli Calendar has had a few different updates to it over the last half century but has always been known as a symbol of exclusivity and typically female supermodels posing in some form of interestingly lit or revealed nudes. While the aspect of the artfully presented nudes is not anything different, the style still speaks of ‘more’. More depth, more interest, more politics even than before.
In a time where retouching has led to models being shown with no knees or elbows and unrealistic body dimensions and skin, the 2017 Pirelli Calendar is intent to be the exclusive gift that people want even more than they have before. While the models in this upcoming year’s Pirelli Calendar are actresses this time, they are still hailed as some of the best in their field.
Though there is no fashion on display in the photos per say, there is a feel to each of the released photos that draws you in to examine much more than just the actresses modeling for the calendar. The focus is on them, of course, but the beauty and style shown by each of these icons transcends the lens.
The 2017 Pirelli Calendar will continue to be everything a calendar should be, just with a feel of ‘more’, and the continued air of exclusivity will permeate its sought after pages.

The Pirelli Calendar is keeping on breaking decades of tradition with another unconventional issue, which this time around sees international celebrities, such as Kate Winslet, Alicia Vikander, and Uma Thurman as the upcoming 2017 Pirelli Calendar‘s modeling stars. Although more than 4 months are separating us from the actual beginning of 2017, we already have a few sneak peek pictures of the new issue!
The Italian famed calendar already broke its longtime tradition of casting bombshell models only (usually it was a maximum of two per edition), giving preference to equally stunning ambassadors, yet seen through a different light. The 2016 Pirelli Calendar took photographer Annie Leibovitz to celebrate all the women’s accomplishments by lensing some of the world’s most renowned creative artists, athletes and activists, such as Patti Smith, Serena Williams and Amy Schumer.
In a similar way, the 2017 Pirelli Calendar focuses on an analogous theme, enhancing all of its ambassadors’ achievements with honest and natural portraits captured by Peter Lindbergh.
The 2017 (literally) Oscar-winning Pirelli Calendar, as seen from the sneak peeks we can finally lay our eyes on, introduces us to the lives of actresses Julianne Moore, Robin Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Lea Seydoux, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Rooney Mara, Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Helen Mirren and Zhang Ziyi, plus that of Russian professor at Moscow State University Anastacia Ignatova.
When asked about the calendar, iconic photographer Peter Lindbergh (this is his third partnership with Pirelli) told Vogue he wanted his 2017 lineup of models to be “a counter message to [the industry’s] fake beauty ideal.’ He also wanted to “gather all the big names of actresses who are not known to do bimbo movies, but are known to do sensible films‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö√Ümost of them have got Oscars‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö√Üand then let them be them.’
Famous for his cinematic and wholeheartedly elegant portraits, Peter Lindbergh seems to be the perfect choice for what appears to be Pirelli’s brand new philosophy and approach, as reflected in the sneak peeks too. From what we can see, Lindbergh is focusing on expressions, natural looks and emotional portraits, with the actresses posing against a black background that inevitably enhances both their beauties and introspective emotions.
“The one big difference between actresses and models is that models are fixed to the camera, and actresses never look at a camera if you don’t force them. [‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√묨‚àÇ] That’s a fundamental difference. For this calendar, I wanted first to do it with the [original] supermodels who are all 45, 50 years old now, and they look amazingly beautiful. That was the first statement I wanted to do, to say ‘These women are 45, 50, and what’s wrong about it?’ No [extreme] retouching,’ continued Lindbergh in his interview with Vogue.
Aside from taking us into the lives of these amazing women, the 2017 Pirelli Calendar heads us to five different locations spread across the world: New York and Los Angeles (where many actresses were born), Le Touquet (France), Berlin and London. It is thus an intersectional and cosmopolitan calendar indeed, and we can’t wait to see the final product!

Lensed by Annie Leibovitz, the new 2016 Pirelli Calendar has been finally launched at a news conference in London’s Mayfair, getting an exclusive makeover for its 43rd edition picturing all the models in clothes except for Amy Schumer. It got definitely more natural and mature, focusing more on what’s inside its models rather than on their slender figures.
While in the past few years the Pirelli Calendar focused on one or two supermodels at a time (memorable poses were those of Isabeli Fontana, Gigi Hadid, Candice Huffine and Joan Smalls, just to mention a few), for this unconventional edition the most awaited calendar of the year took 13 of the world’s most inspiring women, from athletes to bloggers to artists, and chose a different angle to portray them. The 2016 issue wants thus to celebrate all women’s accomplishments, whether they come from social, cultural, artistic and professional backgrounds or not.

The 2016 Pirelli Calendar’s pages include: the first Chinese UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador ever, Yao Chen, art collector and patroness Agnes Gund along with her granddaughter Sadie Rain Hope-Gund, blogger and founder of Style Rookie Tavi Gevinson, Iranian visual artist Shirin Neshat, Russian model Natalia Vodianova, producer Kathleen Kennedy, comedian Amy Schumer, film director Ava DuVernay, singer Patti Smith, tennis player Serena Williams and musician and performer Yoko Ono, whose appearance could be the most iconic one in the calendar, thanks to her fabulous top hat and tuxedo jacket.
Leibovitz, whose works helped the Rolling Stones get a unique style, began shooting the 13 women in her studio back in July, making sure each one of the soon-to-be featured pictures could totally embrace each of the models’ essence and personality. To better achieve an intimate look, the pictures were shot in black & white, and didn’t require being post-edited that much.
“When Pirelli first came to me and said they wanted to shift this year to something different, I said that after all these years of the Pirelli calendar, and what it has been, I don’t think you can shift it that fast. I don’t think you can suddenly do something else. [‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√묨‚àÇ]I’m very very proud of it, and I’m proud of Pirelli for taking that step, too ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö√Ü it’s such a big step. It shouldn’t be ‚Äö√Ñ√∂‚àö√ë‚àö√Ü but it is. I think that Pirelli has been wanting to do this for a few years, to shift. I love to take something that you wouldn’t expect and make something out of it. I’m not afraid of that,’ Leibovitz said.
As usual, the Pirelli Calendar also features a behind-the-scenes short film, revealing the models’ feeling and impressions of Leibovitz’s work.
Serena Williams, who poses for the month of April and is one of the fiercest body positive advocates of our time, felt happy about showing a different side of her personality. “Being a black girl put into this, I hope that I would represent something iconic, something that people would really like to be, and people would really like to do. People can really relate to me because I don’t hide who I am. Annie definitely shot something in me that not only do I like, but I love, it shows a different side. I love being one of the first, one of the pioneers, and I think it’s really exciting to be inspiring to other people,’ she declared.
33-year-old Vodianova, who besides being a supermodel and actress is also the founder of the Naked Heart Foundation, an organization that aims to provide a safe environment for children living in urban Russia (Vodianova herself was born and grew up in a poor district of Avtozavod), stated to be excited about Pirelli’s new direction, hoping the calendar could keep on following this inspiring new path from now on (and so do we). “Today, society is moving toward embracing all kinds of women and empowering them further to do more, to say more, to be stronger and I’m very happy for the Pirelli calendar that it is going in that same direction.’

Every model has their little secrets and tricks they use every day. They all have a different walk, smile or a seductive look. Those small features are the things that make supermodels special and unique. Beauty Duckie Thot is one of the biggest sensations at the moment. Thot opened up for Allure and shared some of her best modeling tips. Thanks to her we can all have the perfect pout, learn how to do an ideal selfie and walk fiercely like a real supermodel. Press play on the video to find out more about her six best modeling tips.
First of all, Duckie is going to teach you how to get that ideal pout when you are taking a picture. She has a little trick up her sleeve that you will find very useful. When Thot is posing she has her lips touching, but her teeth are just a tiny bit apart. That is when she sucks in the cheeks a little bit and gets a natural contour. It gives a definition and accents the bone structure of your face. Duckie admits that she is not a fan of the duck lip. But she found the perfect solution that you can also try out.
Thot has a favorite posture called “The Lean’ when it comes to posing. It is an extremely easy pose that will make you feel good in your body. All you have to do is put all the weight on one leg. Your toes have to be pointed forward, straight. Her advice is to do whatever you want with your arms. You can simply place them on your hips or cross them over.
She recently appeared in the new Pirelli calendar, portraying Alice in Wonderland. The gorgeous South Sudanese-Australian model also starred in Rihanna’s campaign for Fenty Beauty. Duckie is only 22-years-old and is on the way to build a super-successful career.
Plus-size models are officially in, and are taking the modeling industry by storm, with IMG Models being one of the leading agencies with this progression. 31-year-old Candice Huffine marks the latest addition to IMG’s repertoire, joining other leading ladies like Ashley Graham, Chelsea Miller, Danielle Redman, Precious Lee, and Tara Lynn.
Huffine’s breakthrough photoshoot was in V Magazine’s “Curves Ahead,” an editorial feature photographed by Solve Sundsbo featuring the model. It wasn’t long after that when she was photograhed by Steven Meisel for a spread in Vogue Italia, and then later on for appearances in a variety of magazines, like American Vogue, CR Fashion Book, W, and she could also be seen on the covers of British magazine i-D and Spanish magazine S Moda.
The size-12 model also took the time to appear in ad campaigns supporting the maneuver of plus-size models into the fashion industry. Lane Bryant’s “I’m No Angel” and “Plus is Equal” campaign were among the most notable. Non-controversial campaigns featuring the model, however, included shoots for Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Marina Rinaldi, Marks & Spencer, Nordstrom, and Torrid, and she was also cast as a model for the 2015 Pirelli Calendar. Sophie Theallet also cast Huffine to walk the runway for her show back in fall, and Carine Roitfeld had her walk for her Cannes Film Festival amfAR Gala fashion show. She is clearly no stranger to the modeling industry, and in this time of her past she was being represented by Muse; it only seems natural that IMG would want to snag her up next.
Huffine is a model that really embodies what it means to be a plus-size model, by serving as a positive role model for the profession. Those who oppose the idea of plus-size models being cast often associate “plus-size” with “overweight” or “out of shape,” when in all reality they are some of the most fit women in the industry. Huffine has recently completed a half marathon in New York City, which is something viewers around the world could gain inspiration from.
Plus-size models don’t promote positive images of people being “overweight,” they promote the positive idea that it is okay if your healthy body weight happens to be higher than another person, who might also be beautiful ” beauty doesn’t always come in a size 2. In fact, Huffine stands as proof that size 12 can look just as good, and with a half marathon under her belt, people around the world will be able to look to her for inspiration in fashion, fitness, and endeavors for a positive self-image.
